ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Groove For Thought is...
A group of six singers who share a love of contemporary vocal music. GFT sings an assortment of jazz, gospel, r&b, and pop music both a cappella and with a live band. The members of GFT all have extensive backgrounds in vocal jazz and bring something fun, exciting, and unique to the idiom.

GFT originated in 1998 when Kelly Kunz and two former students, James Niles and Randy Taylor, began singing together at Kelly’s home studio in Renton, Washington. A year later, Kelly’s brother Kevin was added to the lineup. The group soon realized that to perform the thick harmonies they could achieve through overdubbing in the studio, they would need to add more singers. Jeff Horenstein was added and the group began rehearsing and performing at schools, jazz festivals, and community events throughout the Seattle area. GFT has since rounded out its lineup adding singer Peter Jones and has performed throughout the western United States and Canada.

The group's early performances were completely a cappella and in 2005, they won the Pacific Northwest Regional Harmony Sweepstakes Competition as well as the "Best Original Arrangement" and "Audience Favorite" awards. They went on to win the National Harmony Sweepstakes Competition along with the "Best Original Song" award. GFT now performs with a live band and is proud to announce the release of their debut CD Groove For Thought.

Groove for Thought
I saw this group in live during an acapella festival and was impressed enough to buy their CD. A great discovery since the CD was even more than I expected. Tight, complex vocal harmonies and some great combinations with backing orchestration that is difficult to do well. Enjoy!

Vocal Jazz, R&B, Gospel, and Pop at it's finest.
It takes just six guys to produce the thick and complex harmonies that characterize Groove for Thought's sound, but the talent evident on this debut album is more than enough for sixty guys! Each of these fellows had childhood homes full of music and training in school right through college. All play instruments (which you can hear a bit of on the album), but each has decided voice is their favorite medium. Member Kelly Kunz also found that he had a talent for arranging, which is very evident on the CD. We're so lucky these gifted musicians found each other. (Of course, that wasn't hard for brothers Kelly and Kevin Kunz.) You will detect the influence of The Hi-Lo's, Singers Unlimited, The Carpenters, and Take 6, but the total sound is GFT's own. The awards this Washington state group has won are too many to list, so just let me say, I'm sure you'll award them high honors, too!

Wow, what great vocal inventiveness and delivery!
I am amazed all over again each time I listen to this CD. I hear something new and remarkable almost each time. Awesome vocals and arranging. (So sad to hear Kevin is moving on.) Hope another CD is in the works!
