Album Notes

Blistering funk rock and jazzy soul ahead of its time! Sixth release from the band and its first CD, this tightly focused effort was considered a departure from Groove Thangs' previous eclectic offerings. Palm Beach Post: "There's a provocative, well-conceived theme here: Life's a struggle, often unfair and unjust, but don't give up trying." New Times: "Humanism with a dose of streetwise anarchy links nearly all of the songs thematically." Thrust Magazine: "The lyrics are emotional, introspective and brilliant." Produced by the band and recorded in their own studio, the album's ten songs range sonically from hard bass-slapping funk to atmospheric soul to pulsing dance rhythms. Features the songwriting and guitar of Bonefish Johnny and the incredible vocals and sturdy keyboards of his brother Down Pat, bass by Christopher B, Tim Kuchta's drummming and the stellar sax of Jeff Watkins, who would go on to play with James Brown for a dozen years (up to the Godfather's passing) and currently performs with Joss Stone. "Uppression" eventually won Florida-based Jam Magazine's "Jammy" Award for Best Independent Release of 1991. Remastered for the 21st century, this is a new pressing in exact repro packaging.

Since 1984 Groove Thangs have been making a name for themselves at home and on the road playing original funk, rock and soul music for the masses. Founded in Florida by Bonefish Johnny and his brother Down Pat with the help of other brother Michael and a slew of badass musicians, Groove Thangs have forged not only their own sound but a special attitude about life and love that has endeared them to music fans around the world. After getting signed and dropped by a major label in 1989, Groove Thangs went on to successfully record and release their music independently, winning awards and gaining sponsorship while proving it on stage every night. Coming off the road in '92, Groove Thangs still perform annually and in 2009 are celebrating their 25th year of making funky music together!
