Green Rode Shotgun are one of the few groups left who actually have no intentions other than to play good rock and roll. Contrived, pretentious, or pre-packaged are words that can never be used to describe Green Rode Shotgun. Bang, their first LP, is a medley of foot-tapping, emotional-yet-light-hearted songwriting that reflects the confusion, optimism, insecurity, and excitement of a young American rock band.
Green Rode Shotgun was born out of the vestiges of several other Tennessee bands in the summer of 2001. Their debut EP, Persistence of Youth, garnered glowing local reviews. Each of the five members brought with them an assortment of influences that are reflected through Green Rode Shotgun's music; the result is a distinctive melting-pot sound with the lyrical genius of Van Morrison, the classic rock melodies of Led Zeppelin, and the energy of a young REM.
In addition to a unique sound, Green Rode Shotgun possesses a one-of-a-kind attitude. All of the songs are written collectively, with each member sharing credit. Jason Johnson, vocalist, provides a candid explanation for this quasi-socialist concept, "We think as a band, though we have different influences. Because we are diverse internally, when we work together, the external becomes 'un-pinpoint-able.' "
Furthermore, the band has an explicitly old-school approach to recording techniques. The entirety of Bang was recorded live, with the exception of a few vocal tracks. Green Rode Shotgun whole-heartedly believes in being true to their music, and preserve an unadulterated, original sound.
The tenacious, fearless philosophy of Green Rode Shotgun can be surmised from a synopsis of Bang's "Nothing New": Mr. Green was an old man with abandoned dreams. He had a thumbtacked map of places he had never been. The boys with guitars decided to take charge of fate and embark on a journey to discover life. They hopped in the car, top down, lights on, and took off.... and Green rode shotgun.
