Finding inspiration from the current political atmosphere, the Bush administration, and the southern surroundings within the “Bible belt” from whence they hail, Grunky Funk set out to record a satirical album addressing the politics of the post 2004 presidential election. Incensed by the knee-jerk support of most country acts toward the Bush administration and its war in Iraq, Grunky Funk set out to provide a voice for the country music artist and fan not beholden to extreme religious fundamentalism, homophobia, and unjustified war. The goal of the album is to parody the reality of the current American rightwing culture as a means of discharging the depression, anger, and frustration with which those in the center and to the left are stricken. If you are dissatisfied with the direction America is currently heading, you might want to listen, and maybe laugh where you would otherwise mourn.

Subversive Alt Country with a punk aesthetic
author: Giggah
Grunky Funk's debut Album, The Year of Defeat, is a deft combination of social commentary and virtuoso guitar playing. Thematically evocative of Green Day's American Idiot, Grunky Funk cleverly satirizes the underlying ethos of the neo-consevative revolution with a musical style that is at once classically American and experimentally modern. This CD is a must have.

Incredible guitar, powerful lyrics.

This CD is amazing. The parodies of the Bush administration go beyond any simplistic humor one might expect to find. The lyrics are thoughtful and invoke emotions of rage, sadness and humor regarding our current world political climate.
The musical talent displayed on this album is incredible. The obvious influences of Junior Brown along with other great guitarists ring loud and clear.
I highly recommend this music, not only to those looking to ease the pain caused by the Bush administration, but for true music lovers. You will not be disappointed by this album.
