Album Notes

The composer G.S. Haynes is everywhere; thousands play his arrangements of pop and standard songs and his teaching adaptations of classical compositions. He is also known for his work with the progressive rock group State Of Enchantment.

In this remarkable CD, the composer has presented a glimpse into the world and the process of the composer in the studio. The centerpiece of the disc are the Ten Sonatinas (2000-2001), interesting short easy pieces for Intermediate or Adult Beginner Level pianists. These pieces were created to provide repertoire for players at this level to master and use in more aurally advanced social settings where graded lesson book songs would not impress.

Also included are bits of conversation between the composer and the performers during the recording session, and a selection of rare live concert recordings, from the Non Tanto series of mostly-piano pieces which Mr. Haynes has produced for over a quarter of a century.

There is more on this CD; a recording of The Magician's Spell, an extended solo piano work that was the composer's personal warhorse in his 20's. Total playing time 74 minutes. Stylistically unique, emotionally memorable, this music somehow speaks to most who give it a hearing. Very little will be said about G.S. Haynes, but this modern master continues to build enduring sonic cathedrals to Glory and the pure joy of Music.

good music, but student piano players. real value is being in the room with the composer. a rare bit of history, i think will be very valuable in the future.

This isn't a regular music album. It seems to be an actual recording session, complete with the performers commenting and working out how to perform the pieces, while the composer guides them. The sonatinas are interesting short pieces intended for adult intermediate piano students. It is fascinating at times to hear the process of bringing the music to life. The indexing lets you skip to the music. The Non Tantos are older recordings of early works, the quality isn't so good. They were recorded live, and there is some hiss. The last work, "The Magician's Spell”, is quite impressive. It is very sonorous and dreamy, and it feels as if we are in another period of history somehow. 4 stars for the quality of the older recordings, but 5 stars for the music, and the amount of music, and the intimate personality of the overall album. It’s a good value for the price, one of the best CD’s I’ve purchased lately.
