Album Notes

Green Street is a hip-hop/jazz group, consisting of emcee A-live, and producer Renaissance. Originally from Boston, MA and now residing in Brooklyn, NY, they are always trying to push the boundaries of hip-hop music. By using everything from samples to live instrumentation, Green Street brings back the sound from the Native Toungues-era while still keeping it fresh and relevant for today’s audience.

Often compared to the likes of A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots, Green Street brings a positive energy with their music, fusing true school hip-hop rhetoric with soulful jazzy backdrops. In 2006, they released their critically acclaimed independent album Livin’ On Green Street, which featured guest appearances from Phonte of Little Brother and Replife. Since then, Green Street has gone on to collaborate with Oddisee, of Low Budget/Halftooth Records fame, and Tableek of the legendary Masspyke crew

This album takes a step back from the everyday and the mainstream. It has a relaxed Hip Hop feel, and it is not too hard for your average head to notice the thought and work that went into it. This album is great for chillin thoughtfully. Worth checking out if you like good music.

you won't listen to this once, but innumerable times

I first saw A-Live in Lexington. He was spittin in my crew's event, and though everyone's eyebrows did not rise, mine certainly did, and so did every MC's, DJ's, Writer's, and BBoy's in the room. This guy was kicking ass. It just so happened that two months later his crew released a CD which kicked AS MUCH ASS. This CD, as A-Live said to me, was "their best at this moment". I believe that this was Green Street's best, but this crew has SO MUCH POTENTIAL. They could top this. I know this for a fact. I won't go on and on as to how dope this CD is. I would just like to say that though this isn't a perfect CD, it is memorable, thoughtfull, unique, and...just plain chill. Buy this CD. The only issue with it is the MCing at times. Reniassance is fire. A-Live has dope rhymes and dope points, but he needs to work on his flow a little more. When the beat is slow, he's stellar. When he needs to rush himself, he SOUNDS like he's being rushed. If I hear on their second CD the same calibur of rhymes and beats but better FLOW, I would probably put the CD on my top five CD's of all time. I'm proud to listen to this every time it enters my CD player. Don't stop the revolution guys. Keep it coming.
