Gutter & Spine began as a duo project between roommates David Lowe and Michelle Leona, each writing songs. They met David Hornbuckle at a Christmas party, and he agreed to play bass for the band and contribute some songs of his own. After a few months, Hornbuckle moved to lead guitar, and the band recruited Joe Yoga to fill the low end.
