Prepare to Be Surprised
author: Adam Reed (deermada@pobox.com)
It's easy to compare Gwendolyn to Syd Barrett. While that comparison is a fair one, ULTRASOUNDS goes beyond showcasing this singer/songwriter's penchant for psychedelic folk. On ULTRASOUNDS, we get to hear Gwendolyn's talent for simple but brilliant songwriting. While "Freedom of the Heart" has made Gwendolyn sorta-famous for her simplicity and brilliance, it doesn't stand up to "Bungalow Babies" or "Seahorse" for pure melodic beauty or song construction. If you want to be challenged a bit more, check out "Take a Rock" or "Snail Trail". And if you like chick-singer radio hits, get ready for Gwendolyn to derail your pre-conceptions with "Calico". Gwendolyn delivers it all with a flawless, beautiful voice. Whatever you're expecting, prepare to be surprised. That's the beauty of ULTRASOUNDS.
