"GYNOMITE: Fearless, Feminist Porn"
WHAT: Sex Positive Porn for Chicks. Gynomite: Putting the clit on the map! Taking the scorn from porn, GYNOMITE defiantly reclaims the female libido. Why "Porn" and not "Erotica"? Because "Erotica" evokes
images of soft focus art films and innuendoes; whereas "Porn" implies something dirty, something much more direct, something unafraid to take what it wants.
GYNOMITE began as a reading series in Los Angeles in June of '94, the collective brainchild of spoken word activist/Houston homegirl Liz Belile, poet and director of the Fund for the Feminist Majority's Rock for Choice project, duVergne Gaines, and recording artist Weba Garretson, collectively known as The Flaming Viragos. The idea was to create a safe arena for women to publicly (and artfully) express their deepest desires and sluttiest fantasies, without anxiety or apology. GYNOMITE sold out "the Lenny Bruce" room in the basement of Luna Park in L.A. and boy, was it FUN. Then The Flaming Viragos recorded and produced a CD from two nights of readings. GYNOMITE hit the road, and packed the house with our CD release party at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas.
