Album Notes

Gypsy Meltdown features a trio of musicians active in the traditional American folk dance scene. With Kathy Kerr on fiddle and mandolin, Colleen Reed on flute, saxophone and percussion, and Keith Gillis on guitar, Gypsy Meltdown weaves together old and new melodies from New England, Appalachia, and the British Isles with rhythm, groove and attitude.

Our band name Gypsy Meltdown inspires a unique set of musical moods. One is the entrancing, seductive feel of the gypsy meltdown in contra dancing when two dancers circle each other with locked eyes before melting into a swing. The other is the exuberant, high-energy romping and leaping of Gypsy, Colleen’s German Shepherd.

Unleashed, our debut album, highlights a wide range of music styles and our desire to go beyond the traditional. We have included modern tunes, original compositions, and many traditional favorites.

Delightful lively folk-oriented acoustic music

I was expecting good things from this band, but I was pleasantly surprised by the production values of this CD. The recording quality is terrific, and the flow from one song to another is well-considered. Each performer is nicely featured as well as integrated into this lively ensemble, and there's a good balance between lyric flow and percussive energy. This is a great album to listen to while driving, washing the dishes, or eating lunch, as well as dancing to!
