Album Notes

Alec Haavik (Tenor and Soprano Saxophone) presents a set of original compositions which meld the gritty sounds of rock-and-roll with improvisational jazz. The band includes some of the most fiercely original voices on the scene in New York City. Check out the opening track, "Make It Happen," which moves from 80's pop to polytonal reggae to Miles Davis 70's fusion to Devo-style New Wave. The next track, "Ebay," was inspired by both Jimi Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary" and the atonal music of 20th Century composer, Anton Von Webern. Rounding out the experience is a pair of cover tunes: "Life of Leisure" (Luscious Jackson) and a medley of "Walking on the Moon" (The Police) and "Giant Steps" (John Coltrane). There's still more musical surprises, brought to life by these astounding players.

Haavik’s compositions and improvisational playing are stellar. I hear lots of bits of things in Haavik’s Rocks, including John Lurie, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Branford Marsalis, MMW, Spyro Gyra, Frank Zappa, and ‘80s-era King Crimson, as well as Haavik’s cited influences. The playing is impeccable, creative, and unique. Your enjoyment of this CD will likely increase with each subsequent listen.

I'm no connoisseur of Jazz, but I loved this CD. Looking forward to the next one he puts out.

Adventurous and interesting to listen to...

Amongst the endless array of CDs I received this Christmas, Alec Haavik ROCKS is certainly the most adventurous and interesting to listen to.  When I'm not dancing to the Grateful Dead, or headbanging to my new Black Sabbath CD, I'm chilling out and groovin' to this CD. And, I must say, Mr. Haavik truly does rock.  I love his combination of the late 50s Coltrane-era sound with the more modern sounds similar to the Chick Corea Elektrik Band or Al Dimeola.
