Cabaret Hotline Online's "2008 Cabaret/Folk Album of the Year."

AOK records is proud to announce the release of “Taking Flight,” the highly anticipated debut CD from vocalist Hilary Ann Feldman. Praised by cabaret legend Karen Mason, Hilary's debut recording is an enchanting collection of classic and contemporary standards, theatrical songs, and off-the-beaten path gems. Performed with skill, creativity, and heart, the CD is a showcase for Hilary’s vocal prowess, musical versatility and inviting style.

“Taking Flight” spans from the classic songs of Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, and the Gershwins to the contemporary standards of Lennon & McCartney and Paul Simon and beyond. Included in this delicious mix are tunes by theatrical composers Craig Carnelia and Maltby & Shire; contemporary singer-songwriters Susan Werner, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Gretchen Peters, and Judy Collins; as well as songs by the Bergmans, Michel Legrand, and even Monty Python’s Eric Idle.

Providing the magnificent musical landscape to Hilary’s beautiful watercolor are some of the nation’s top musicians, including the superb Beckie Menzie on piano throughout the CD and, on the trio numbers, Leo Murphy on drums and Scott Mason on bass.

There are no string sections, no big brass bands, no overproduction on this CD. Listening to “Taking Flight,” you will hear Hilary much as you would hear her live, performing music she clearly loves and sharing it with you in her skilled, but simple, honest way.

Hilary is a Chicago-based cabaret singer, actor, and musical director. She received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Illinois in Urbana and a Post Graduate Degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston. She has been part of musical theatre productions at several Chicago area theatres, including the Ravinia Festival, Marriott's Lincolnshire Theatre, Drury Lane Theatre Oak Brook, Drury Lane Theatre Evergreen Park, Bailiwick Repertory Theatre, Centerlight Sign and Voice Theatre, and many others.

However, cabaret is Hilary's true artistic home. She performs her solo cabaret shows regularly at Davenport's Cabaret Room in Chicago, as well as many other public and private venues across the country.

Hilary is the founder and executive/artistic director of Acts Of Kindness Cabaret, a not-for-profit association of cabaret professionals that provides benefit cabaret performances, largely free of charge, as fundraising vehicles for other charitable organizations, spreading kindness through music to raise significant charitable dollars while increasing awareness, understanding, and enjoyment of cabaret.

Sincerity and ebullience in abundance: that’s what we clearly have in clear-voiced Hilary Ann Feldman’s debut album. A refreshing joie de vivre and welcome unpretentious attitude dominate her youthful sound, persona and style. Anything but stuffy or guarded, the Chicago-based vocalist and leader of Acts Of Kindness Cabaret (AOK)—an organization of singers and others who donate their talents for charity events—has an approach to her singing and song choices that projects warmth and caring. Anchored by the solid, wise but unobtrusive work of musical director/pianist Beckie Menzie, a small band accompanies. Taking Flight has an in-flight menu of songs that tend to land in the land of mega-cheer or its opposite: unblinking earnestness, with very little in between. It’s a life-affirming atmosphere into which Hilary Ann Feldman stays in flight.

A Fresh Sound to the Vintage Classics

This album is a must-get. Her palette of tones ranges from sweet lipstick charm, to the dry naked soul in her voice. Brilliant song choice, and brilliant nuances that are fresh and unique to Hilary, without stepping on the toes of the original work. Easily one of the most pleasurable albums I have purchased in a while. Get it today, you will not regret it.
