Album Notes

THE ATLANTICS "Aquarius"
This is a wonderful moody arrangement of "Aquarius." The drums and bass are classic Atlantics, and the guitars fly with echo and spatial reverb. High energy and soaring sound.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE LONGHORN DEVILS "Donna/ Hashish"
Those rockin' Longhorn Devils make gutty work of "Donna/ Hashish" with strong guitars and percussion. Big whammy chords and a lot of edge.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE ATOMIC MOSQUITOS "Manchester England"
Excellent liquid guitars and great drumming are supported by solid bass. "Manchester England" becomes a very nice surf instrumental here. Splendid!
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE WEISSTRONAUTS "I'm Black / Ain't Got No"
What a marvelously playful track. A wonderfully bouncy rhythm supports the melodic fluidity of the melody, and the distant chants backing up part two are priceless. Very cool.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

CRIME FACTOR ZERO "Initials"
"Initials" has a bluesy country sound and feel, on the verge of tweaky strange, yet engaging and fun. Odd, but not uncool.
Tweaky Instrumental Stereo

REV HANK'S TWANG GANG "I Got Life"
Rev Hank's Twang Gang have taken "I Got Life" off the stage and into the brine. Slightly silly rhythmically, but that just seems to add an endearing quality to this fine surf instrumental. Excellent.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

SUSAN AND THE SURFTONES "Hair"
One of a handful of signature tunes from the musical, "Hair" becomes a fine surf instro, with an aquatic melody line and summer's eve sound and feeling. I never would have suspected. It's a simple and direct arrangement, but it sure is effective.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE LAVA RATS "My Conviction"
A thrashing power shred of a song with surprising surfability. Powerful double picking and bass grumble. Nothing in the original musical ripped, but this sure does.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE BOMBERS AND THE VIVISECTORS "Don't Put It Down"
Dueling Russian bands the Bombers and the Vivisectors rock out this simple club combo arrangement of "Don't Put It Down." It's really quite fun, and the riffs from "Wipe Out" are a nice touch.
Combo Instrumental Stereo

THE BUSTIN' BURRITOS "Frank Mills"
The Bustin' Burritos get more creative with every release. This is a sultry liquid island surf guitar arrangement of "Frank Mills" that's inviting and engaging. Dribbling double picked lines, vibrato shimmer. Wonderful!
Surf Instrumental Stereo

SEKS BOMBA "Be-In"
The ever loungy and wonderful Seks Bomba make nice with this little ditty. Saucy and fun with exotic tweakery.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

GALACTIC STRETCH "Where Do I Go?"
Dark and gritty with atmospheric moodiness, "Where Do I Go?" seems to just lurk in imagination, yet calls to a lighter time ahead. Quite interesting.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE RETROLINERS "Black Boys / White Boys"
Stereo lead guitar edges in with reverb and distortion. On the heavy side, with an ominous sound and energy. "Black Boys / White Boys" seems more about the danger than the melody, which works quite well here.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE GLASGOW TIKI SHAKERS "Walking In Space"
One of the most overlooked bands lurking in the mist at the edges of the pool, the Glasgow Tiki Shakers play and write some wonderful and unusual songs. Taking their unique approach to "Walking In Space" results in vibrato shimmer, muted reverb charm, and a beautiful journey across a glassy wall. It accelerates as it advances, ending in an energetic tubular dream. Mighty fine!
Surf Instrumental Stereo

S.P.E.C.T.O.R. "Abie Baby"
This is a very frat-rock mess-around with "Abie Baby" that makes it nothing like it's source. The vinyl clicks and pops detract from the listening pleasure. Mondo fun.
Frat Instrumental Stereo

URBAN SURF KINGS "Three-Five-Zero-Zero"
Surf reverb and Link Wray chordage reinvent "Three-Five-Zero-Zero" in a heavier vein that's quite pleasing. The tribal drums and bass give it a surreal runway underbelly. Yikes!
Surf Instrumental Stereo

20 GUITARS NORTH OF THE BORDER "What A Piece Of Work Is Man"
A billion guitars and bass gives "What A Piece Of Work Is Man" a surreal almost Christmas feeling. Maybe it's the Les Paul like cheesiness, or maybe the jazzy guitar lines.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

KAHUNA KAWENTZMANN "Good Morning Starshine"
Kahuna Kawentzmann has too much fun with his guitar. Low gutty tones, great drums, and funky bass. This is an aurally circulating (actively panned) track that's simply fun. Be prepared to grin.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE SURFTONES "The Flesh Failure (Let The Sunshine In)"
Dripping springs, grumbling bass, sad tone gently bring forth the soft introductory verses, which are wonderful. The highly recognizable chorus is entirely infectious. The active panning on the vibrato guitar adds a psychedelic overtone. Thoroughly wonderful.

Another amazing and unlikely (mostly) surf tribute to one of the most notorious

Lots of very cool tracks. Vocals on this collection of insanity include Robert Cuff aka Ink Mathematics' tasteful Pink Floyd-like "Sodomy," the slightly crunchy "Colored Spade" from Michael Stiletto, "Ain't Got No " from the Hi-Fi Ramblers, "Air" from the ever-wonderful Nematoads, and a countrified "Easy To Be Hard" from the Bluejays. Picks: 20 Guitars North Of The Border 'What A Piece Of Work Is Man', The Atlantics 'Aquarius', The Atomic Mosquitos 'Manchester England', The Bombers and the Vivisectors 'Don't Put It Down', The Bustin' Burritos 'Frank Mills', Crime Factor Zero 'Initials', Galactic Stretch 'Where Do I Go?', The Glasgow Tiki Shakers 'Walking In Space', Kahuna Kawentzmann 'Good Morning Starshine', The Lava Rats 'My Conviction', The Longhorn Devils 'Donna/ Hashish', The Retroliners 'Black Boys / White Boys', Rev Hank's Twang Gang 'I Got Life', Da Surfones 'The Flesh Failure (Let The Sunshine In)', Susan and the Surftones 'Hair', Urban Surf Kings 'Three-Five-Zero-Zero', The Weisstronauts 'I'm Black / Ain't Got No'

A cool deal for surf-rock fans

Based over in Italy, OmOm Music have been releasing some great tribute albums including their great double disc tributes American Graffiti Revisited, That's New Pussycat!- A surf tribute to Burt Bacharach and one of their recent 2005 releases, a tribute to Biker / Surf rock king Davie Allan called Evil Fuzz. Now the label reaches another milestone with their 2005 release of Hair - A Surf Tribal Love-Rock Musical. With fantastic music written by Galt McDermott, Hair spawned a number of classic pop melodies such as the title track, “Aquarius” and “Good Morning Starshine.” For their rockin’ Hair tribute, OmOm have assembled some of today’s top guitar instrumental groups to perform on this mostly instrumental 24 track CD. Kicking off the The Atlantics serving up a surf-rock treatment of “Aquarius,” the CD moves on with fine performances from notable groups like The Weisstronauts, The Atomic Mosquitoes, Urban Surf Kings, Seks Bomba and much more. A cool deal for surf-rock fans and those who enjoyed all the great music of Hair, OmOm’s surf-musical version of Hair also features some way-cool psychedelic ‘60s cover art
