So, I relocated to KC and found David's Songwriter Circle. We recently traded CDs and I am compelled to write about David's latest.
His writing embodies all that I know about folk music - I hear Tom Paxton, John Denver, Bob Dylan, and the echoes of others all made new. My absolute favorite on this CD is "Working In Stone", a song about a stone mason's life. I love gospel choir music, and this is a wonderful example of that genre. I kept playing it over and over, and it has the sound of a classic.
Good job, David.

david hakan is keeping folk music alive in kansas city with his newest release..

david hakan is keeping folk music alive in kansas city with his newest release..."loose upon the street". david has been carrying the 'folk by the campfire' torch vigorously for years in the midwest, particularly kansas city. On this album he is like a madman shouting from every corner the laments of the common and not so common 'man' with songs like "United Nations of America"... a futuristic look back at the present Bush administration's big stick policies, "Engine 7 Ladder One"...which documents 9/11 and a firemans heroism...(a harrowing song), and "Small Rural Hometown"...a beautifully crafted meloncholic look at the casualties of so-called progress and expansion.
David hits on alot of other less weightier themes. He has a touching song about family via the symbolism of making chili on "Home Cooking".
"The Getaway" and the title cut are also highlights. "High Country" is also a fave. David has the excellent work of producer engineer Steve Phillips (who also adds some instrumentation to some tracks) and his backing vocalist is an excellent compliment to david's folkie style (Sally Bell). Highly recommended! Thanks david for some great music and for keeping the campfires burning with tunes for all these years. : ) .......forrest
