Album Notes

Bluegrass music, unleashed on the world by Bill Monroe in the 1940's, was born of rural tradition yet forcefully delivers songs of woe, love, more woe and train wrecks that speak to the urban audience as well. Half Day is part of the growing current of bluegrass not only in Chicago but the Midwest. Formed in 2001 and named after an old Northern Illinois town that has been bulldozed into history, the band regularly plays venues from local pubs to Midwest bluegrass festivals with youthful energy, snappy instrumental work and tight vocal harmony. Whether performing in the traditional style of Bill Monroe or the Stanley Brothers, or in the newer urban style of Hot Rize or Seldom Scene, Half Day delivers a unique approach to bluegrass with appeal to the modern ear yet firmly grounded in the foundation laid by the old masters.

Quality bluegrass. Love the song selection.

I've been looking for bluegrass that is done right with a traditional edge but isn't afraid to branch out. This is a CD that does that. I've not been to Chicago but it sounds like Chicago has a cool bluegrass scene. I love the fact that this band just doesn't emulate the bluegrass masters but also tackles musical giants like Hank Williams and the Grateful Dead, and they do it with energy and flawless picking. Big thumbs up on this CD.

They're doing the picking, I'm doing the grinning

I listened to the sound clips and bought the CD. It did not disappoint. These guys really can pick! I get razzed from my friends for listening to 'hillbilly music' but even they really dug it. I Know YOu Rider is way cool. So is Rawhide. They do some Hank Williams too.

The first moments of this record pull you in with a banjo guitar and mandolin instrumental played at top finger-pickin' speed, and it isn't long before the haunting theme of "Molly Bean" is stuck in your head and you're truly disappointed to have it end. "Who's That Knockin' At My Door" is a great vocal, as is "Red Clay Halo." This is just a fun record that makes me want more.
