"Stages", Halie Loren's fourth album and first ever live CD, shines a spotlight on Loren's abilities as a singer and interpreter of songs like never before.
As a follow-up to her critically acclaimed and international award-winning 2008 release, “They Oughta Write a Song”, she again presents a winning combination of her eloquent original music, heartfelt renditions of favorite jazz standards, and stunning versions of “jazzified” pop/rock songs such as U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and The Kinks’ “Sunny Afternoon”. Like more modern jazz/pop artists of today, such as Norah Jones and Madelyn Peyroux, she bridges together multiple styles and eras to create music that is both unique and timeless, sultry and endearing.
The incredibly skilled musicianship on this album is credited to: Matt Treder (keyboards), Mark Schneider (bass), Brian West (drums), and Tim McLaughlin (trumpet). The live recordings were recording at concerts on the Oregon Coast in 2009.

With a repertoire that includes dazzling originals and sly covers from artists like U2, The Kinks, Melody Gardot, and Pete Seeger, Halie Loren’s impeccable delivery helps these jazzy tunes flow seamlessly from one to the next. With a minimal jazz band (piano, upright bass, drums, plus occasional trumpet) accompaniment, Loren’s silky voice should appeal to fans of likeminded crossover jazz singers like Diana Krall and Norah Jones. The real standout track is her original folky pop “Free to be Loved by Me” which calls to mind both Carly Simon and Sarah McLachlan, with the nice addition of male harmony vocals. Her respect for the past is undeniable, while her finger on the pulse of modern music gives her songs a wide appeal that reaches far beyond jazz clubs. This is really good stuff that would sound excellent when paired with a latte and scone. Just try it and you’ll see.
