Much Better Than Most Americana CDs
author: Stace England
I wasn’t sure what to expect on the first listen to America’s Pastime and found myself very pleasantly surprised at all aspects of the disk. Phil Bayer is a real wordsmith and his earnest, sometimes weary vocals fit perfectly with the right on, simple, warm production throughout. Most of the America/alt-country CDs I hear (and I hear many) are OK affairs but just not that interesting - this disk is much better than 95% of them. America’s Pastime is better because of the surprise production and instrumentation twists, which all work, and Hank and Ruth bring a tuneful pop sensibility to some of their Americana landscape that works much better than bands like Old 97s. I don’t know how the CD was recorded but it sounds like a comfortable affair among friends – a safe environment where creativity could unfold. Holds up over many listens and pulls you into their world. Great stuff.

Saw Hank and Ruth open for Lowen and Navarro in Minneapolis. The harmonies are beautiful. The CD has a variety of harmonies and is one of my favorites.
