ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Hank Cramer is the "real deal", an actual working "shantyman" who sails aboard tall ships and knows the work, the songs, the factual history, and the nautical lore. The rhythmic "shanties" were used to keep crew members in time as they did their daily work in the age of sail -- raising anchors, hoisting and trimming sail, working the pumps, and rowing the ship's boats. "Forebitters" were the ballads they sang to while away the hours in their off-duty time. Hank has sailed aboard the brig "Lady Washington" for twenty years, and given concerts aboard the bark Balclutha in San Francisco, the sloop-of-war Constellation in Baltimore, and the USS Constitution Museum in Boston. He performs at nearly every maritime museum and music festival in North America. He is respected both as a historian and as a musician. Armed with a booming bass voice and a wry sense of humor, his songs are frequently boisterous and sometimes quite touching. You will want to sing along - and you should!
