notes

The idea that Harland had a future as an artist never occurred to her when she moved to New York from her hometown of London, UK.

With her musician boyfriend off on tour, in her Brooklyn apartment, she found herself alone with a four-track recorder, a beaten up acoustic guitar and cockroaches. So she began writing.

Upon hearing her sing, musicians and friends around her recognized a talent. With this encouragement, she saved up to fly herself to Australia for a month to collaborate with Andrew Wright, a burgeoning producer who was looking for a singer. Together, they made her first 12 song demo under the name Phoelar. The results were impressive as well as surprising for a first effort, and showcased an extraordinary voice and songwriter in the making.

Encouraged by the sessions in Australia, she bought herself a sampler and a keyboard and began experimenting back in New York City. Never trained on an instrument, she taught herself composition by ear and the technical side of recording by studying manuals.

Her first solo attempts were a collection of haunting and original songs which were later to be released as "Sinking Shade." Shortly after these creations, Harland delivered the album "Salt Box Lane." Through word of mouth, the songs quickly found their way around the world.

Her career has been gathering tempo since then. she has signed to a publishing deal, collaborated as a highly sought after guest vocalist with seminal electronic artists Rio Klein, Josh Ryan, Ferry Corsten, Junkie Xl, Pole Folder and Josh Abraham, has toured theatres in Canada and America as a lead vocalist for Delerium, and has played her first solo live shows in New York.

Harland spends her time between New York, London and Australia creating music and performing.

Review from a fan:

I first heard about Harland from an email message board I subscribe to. The short review of her music was so positive I quickly clicked on the link (http://www.harlandmusic.com) and made a discovery unparalleled by any other in my years of musical treasure hunts.

I immediately downloaded four complete songs from Harland's Web site. After hearing them, I knew this was my find of the year. The songs were so well written and arranged, and were sung with an angelic voice unlike any I had heard before. I needed more!

When I found out that Harland was chosen to tour with Delerium on their first tour, I was happy to know that others were starting to acknowledge her unique talents. It is a shining example of her talent that this unknown artist was chosen out of the dozens of popular vocalists that have sung on Delerium's four vocally-supported albums. The simple fact that she was chosen says more about her than I could ever convey.

Shortly before the tour, Harland made available her utterly perfect album "Salt Box Lane," along with her first album under the moniker Phoelar. It is equally as good, if not a bit more experimental. Needless to say I purchased both immediately.

I attended the Delerium show in San Francisco and was instantly blown away by her incredible beauty, powerful stage presence, and magnificent voice.

She has accomplished a great deal in a very short time. And I anxiously look forward to much, much more.

Harland encompasses grace, beauty, style and talent beyond measure.

Absolutely gorgeous, the voice, words and music, painfully so. Her voice makes me weak,it is so delicate, elegant and gently powerful. Sublime all around.

I'm having a hard time deciding which track is my favorite. This CD is certainly packed with great music! It's a shame that the title track "Salt Box Lane" isn't available to listen to as I very much like the sound of that one. However, the other samples give a good indication of how the CD is. If you like the samples on the web, then buy the cd because the other tracks that aren't available are equally good. Very satisfying purchase.

  • This is one CD you should invest your Time & Money Into

I'm the guy that put the message on the e-mail message board that is mentioned in the text above. I've been seeing Harland develop for the last... geez... years (back when she had a different moniker) and I've yet to hear anything by her that's anything short of phenomenal. I tell everyone I know to check her out. I won't bother to tell you what her music is like. Just click "the play all" button and sit back and you'll know. There is such an incredible amount of beauty and depth layered into her music. The opening track Skin is a great introduction to Harland. Beautiful atmospherics, poetic lyrics, and hooks all draw you in. Often the songs will sort of come up on you like a gentle rain and then break into a storm, such as in "Junkbox Misery." I've been playing her songs for years, and it's so incredible to have her full length in my hands to enjoy! Check out Harland, you won't be dissapointed.
