Not your 80s harlequin... Better!

I've been a fan of Harlequin since their very fine album, Love Crimes, from the early eighties. Like many bands from that decade, they fell off the radar and for all purposes were defunct. Happily, they cranked out "Waking the Jester" a few years ago. I'm sorry I didn't catch it when it was first released, but better late than never. As I said in the title, this has very little in common with their early efforts, and that's a good thing. As much as I like Love Crimes, this album stands alongside it as a great companion although there is little similarity between them, at least on the surface. Waking the Jester boasts a much harder sound, leaving the pop sensibilities of their earlier incarnation in the dust as they pursue a modern growl that persists throughout. The guitars are low and thunderous, the vocals are tough, and the songs demand attention. That said, they haven't lost complete touch with their roots. Vocal harmonies are present more often than not, and every song packs a nice hook that makes the album immediate and memorable. Good production, great songs, excellent execution... It deserves far more accolades than it will ever get. For those who are debating the purchase, you may consider this private stock and money well spent. Enjoy, and spread the word.

The songs are fresh but have the Harlequin sound. George Belanger's voice is unmistakeable even after all this time. Rock on!
