Matthew Thoma is a World Music composer and musician, drawing on indigenous cultures and infusing contemporary themes. Originally trained on trumpet, Matthew switched to bass and 6 string guitar, playing with bands and recording throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. After a hiatus from music at the beginning of the new millennium, Matthew returned to recording upon being introduced to the Native American Flute in 2005. His recording project, HarmonicEarth, is dedicated to blending the songs, sounds, and world beats of cultural rich instruments such as the sitar from India, Native American flute, Mayan / Aztec clay flute, harp, violin, erhu, guitar, bass guitar, and many different percussion instruments from around the world. Influenced by Asian and Native American cultures, the music of HarmonicEarth reflects those culture’s respect and reverence towards the natural world and all of its children.
The newest body of work from HarmonicEarth entitled “Evensong” is a collection of compositions invoking the power and mysteries of the night. “Evensong” blends the haunting ancient sounds of the Native American flute with guitar, keyboards, strings, and percussion, set within rich musical soundscapes. Each song draws upon it’s own energy and feeling, but maintains a consistent and flowing conversation with the composition before and after it, creating a smooth journey for the soul.
