Album Notes

Well let's face it. At this stage in the game there is no use writing this in the third person, as if I have some staff that is singing the praises of all my accomplishments. It's pretty much just me, Dan Harney. So since we have all of that out of the way, I'm going to try to give you an idea of what I am all about.

I would love to tell you that I have always lived faithfully to God, but the truth is that there was a period there where I really lost myself and came very close to walking away from my faith completely. I couldn't see God anymore and I didn't understand why any of the hurt was necessary. I could no longer hide my questions and lack of faith.

I can't say that there was any one thing that brought me around again, except that God brings His children back to Himself. Not everything has to resolve in our minds in order for God to be true. In fact, what god would be worth serving if he could be deciphered or categorized in some theology book? I don't have all the answers and I don't believe that God saved us so that we could have all the answers. Rich Mullins once said that God did not give us the scriptures so that we could be right and prove everyone else wrong. He gave us scripture to prove that He is right and we are all just guessing.

Now, as I am trying to pursue music as a lifestyle, my goal is to relay authentic faith. A faith that is not political and self-righteous. A faith that falls and gets back up again. A faith that is not afraid to ask why and cry out in pain. That was the faith of our fathers and that is what I want to sing about.

And that is what Breathing October turned out to be - a collection of songs about the struggle for faith in my life. There are times when God shows Himself so unmistakably clear, that we have no choice but to fall to our knees and worship. There are also times when He feels so far away, we have no option but to cry out in need. Regardless of our perception, God is there. But I believe that God gave us each other so that we can worship and cry together, and it is my hope that these songs can help all of us to do just that.

If Jars of Clay's Flood CD means anything to you, then you need this CD!
author: NYC Review
After being in the industry for over 20 years it doesn't take long to know when you have a winner. It took only a few chords and the sweet harmonies of "Mustard Seed" for me to know that Dan will be going a long way. I have not heard a sound so pure and so clean since Jars of Clay's Flood Album. However, I feel Dan has a more timeless sound than Jars. Crisp clean acoustic guitars, stringed things, and rythmic bass twist and turn and stimulate the senses. I can not wait for the next album!

Breathing October is huge milestone for Dan, his growth as an artist and musician is evident through his honest lyrics of life, love, and struggles. He easily engages you with vocal tones you quickly recognize as the voice of a friend, and as someone who has felt the way you do. Capturing an extremely accessible sound, layering harmonies, Dan breathes october, and send you gazing toward the oaks waiting for the leaves to fall. Pick this one up. ~ donk

In Between
author: Tom Winkels
I like the song “In Between” I think we all feel in between most of the time – knowing what to do and not doing it, desiring to be what God wants us to be and being who we want to be, the constant struggle.
