ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Jakamarra and the Red Ochre Quest
This story is an original tale of mystery, myth and enchantment from the collection ‘Many Kinds of Magic’ written by Australian author, Bill Scott. It’s a story for anyone who has ever loved the words ‘once upon a time’ and wished there were more classic magic stories to discover.

Who will like this story?
This is a light hearted story for anyone who loves rich word patterns and a happy adventure.

About the author - Bill Scott
Bill wrote and edited more than 35 books in his career. He was extremely interested in Australian folklore, as well as folk traditions from all over the world. His original stories for the young at heart are classic adventures in traditional storytelling. They were written to be read out loud and that is one thing that makes them special to the ear and to the heart.

About the performer - Harry Scott
Bill’s son Harry grew up with bedtime stories read out loud every night. He writes. ‘In many ways these were the highlight of every day. Both my Mum and Dad would read to us and I remember hiding under the covers during the scary bits of ‘Lord of the Rings’ before I was ten!’ Harry has worked as an actor and director as well as spending time as a professional storyteller, so it seems a natural fit for him to bring his father’s stories to life once more.

The collaboration
Harry writes, ‘I have a great respect and fondness for all my Dad’s work, but I believe his stories in ‘Many Kinds of Magic’ are very special. I know they were special to him too. I remember him being amazed at where these stories ‘came from’. He would sit in his study with his old typewriter and they would just flow out of him. Of course the explanation was that he had immersed himself in folk traditions and storytelling for decades.’

‘His study was filled with books on all sorts of poetry, folk lore and story telling and so when the time was right - he just set out to write a series of original folk stories – using traditional story patterns, in existing mythical universes. The result is a magical collection of original stories that fit so naturally into folk traditions, they sound like they have existed for centuries.

Different Kinds of Magic
Be aware that the stories in this collection are quite different in tone and flavour. Bamboo Basket Boy is a heartfelt story with a magical twist, while Jakamarra is a magical flurry of lovable characters.
