"Poetry is meant to be spoken, and this first-ever recording of 'Cleophas and His Own' brings new life to the poem. As with the ancient Greek epics, oral recitation animates the events, makes the cast of characters vivid and real.

First released in 2003 in honor of a major retrospective devoted to the painting of this important early American modernist, 217 Records is pleased to present this sound recording of an under-appreciated American poet of the first rank: Marsden Hartley (1877-1943).
"Poetry is meant to be spoken, and this first-ever recording of 'Cleophas and His Own' brings new life to the poem. As with the ancient Greek epics, oral recitation animates the events, makes the cast of characters vivid and real. Michael Maglaras's resonant, rhythmic voice allows the great depth of meaning and emotional intensity of the poem to be felt. Hartley would be touched and honored by this recording." - Gail R. Scott ("The Collected Poems of Marsden Hartley")

I have long been a fan of the painting of Marsden Hartley...but I had no idea of Hartley's stature as a writer! This is first-rate stuff, and Michael Maglaras brings the story of 'Cleophas' to life. I listened to this recording straight through...both discs...and I was mesmerized. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
