CD by 15 bands helps Milk Institute
- Jane Ganahl - San Francisco Chronicle
Friday, September 11, 1998
"MILKSHAKE," a new compilation CD that will benefit the Harvey Milk Institute, will be released Monday at a party at the Great American Music Hall.
Featuring 15 songs by 15 bands, including local favorites, Pansy Division and Red House Painters, as well as British superstars Chumbawamba, "Milkshake" will be launched with sets by these contributors: Berkeley soul favorites, !Tang and San Francisco bands, 100 Watt Smile (featuring violinist Carrie Bradley of the Breeders), Brown-Star and 7th Betty.
The Harvey Milk Institute, named for The City's first gay supervisor who was assassinated in 1978 along with Mayor George Moscone, is a non-profit educational center offering courses which promote the understanding and celebration of diversity. All the proceeds from the initial pressing of 1,000 CDs will go directly to the institute.
"Milkshake," a year in the making, was produced locally at Timmi-kat Records by Moon Trent and David Cole. The Chumbawamba song is a live version of "Homophobia," which was a hit in Britain. The band was a headliner at the recent Gay Freedom Day Parade.
Other contributors include Phranc, Extra Fancy, Spackle, Perch, Blue Period, Simon Stinger, Knife in Water and Omewenne. Included in the package will be a booklet of photos by celebrated photographer Tee A. Corinne, and each band's Web address.
