Chuck Hedges has long been one of the leading proponents of the Goodmanesque clarinet style, and this set is an excellent example. Although The Milwaukee Connection has replaced the piano with guitar, this is still very much in the Benny Goodman small group tradition, with straight-ahead swing on "All Of Me", "Getting Sentimental Over You", "Limehouse Blues", and "I Want to Be Happy". He throws in a couple of surprises. I grew tired of "Besame Mucho" long ago, but Chuck and the group breathe new life into this chestnut. Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa" finds Chuck more in a Buddy DeFranco bag, but that's not a bad thing. On both of these selections, the Milwaukee Connection provides a kicking latin groove and plenty of solo space for all. I will be playing this disc over and over. This is for anyone who loves the Goodman small groups, or just great small group swing! Highly recommended.
