-----------

the following are various press quotes for some of the compilation artists:

THE ROSARIO FOCUS:
"Jersey-based trio The Rosario Focus makes uncommon music that has enough
depth and dynamism to keep those less inclined to listen to experimental
music interested and engrossed ... the Rosario Focus craft a breathy flow
that jaunts from punctuating, rhythmic post punk (à la Girls Against Boys)
to more ambient drums-bass-guitar works, tossing in the occasional spoken
word bit and chintzy drum machine trickle to keep the listener on their
toes ... Great stuff."
- Mike Breen, CityBeat - Cincinnati, OH - May 2003

SOLTERO:
"[Howard's] deep and weathered vocals sound decades beyond his years. He's not
a singer of whimsy; his songs are rooted in mundane reality, often flourishing
in tooth-and-nail struggles of love and salvation."
- Mark Baumgarten, Willamette Week - Portland, OR - December 2003

"Despite the occasional absurd and hilarious lyric, frontman Tim Howard's
deep, throaty vocals place the band's records in the same category as folks
like Red House Painters and Mark Eitzel."
- Time Out - New York - September 2003

THE ISIDORE CHAMBER:
"Another catchy band that mixes together emo with rock for one great taste."
- Opus, owner of Coffee Messiah - Seattle, WA - January 2004

THE PURRS:
"If the guitarist of The Purrs hadn't handed the demo to me personally, I'd
swear that I had just uncovered some unreleased Galaxie 500 tracks. That's
no insult to them: every American band to come out of the shoegaze movement
has borrowed immensely from G500 (see the Dandy Warhols, American
Analog Set). Here's your chance to catch a dreamy, Velvety local band that's got
great pop hooks."
- Nathan Walker, Tablet - Seattle, WA - December 2003

VIA:
"Atmospheric and rocking, Via certainly have a handle on the pleasing shock
value of soft/loud dynamics. Their 2002 album Deception Pass (Woodson
Lateral Records) is melodic and pretty with all the lovely bridges built
in for those essential changes in mood."
- Kathleen Wilson, The Stranger - Seattle, WA - March 2004

RIOT-A-GO-GO:
"Imagine the energy of Vice Squad with the sneer of the Runaways and you get
a glimpse into San Francisco's Riot-A-Go-Go. The '70's speeded-out punk feel,
the nihilistic attitude and blase vocals belie occasionally insightful lyrics
- it all conveys a sense of urgency. Themes about not being cool, sex, struggling
in society, doing what you want. Pretty much everything you might expect,
but done surprisingly well."
- Dan Halligan, Tablet - Seattle, WA - March 2004

"Riot-A-Go-Go keep it real, carrying the torch of old-school political punk
while delivering the fresh energy needed to take it into the future."
- Ricky Reis, SF Weekly - San Francisco, CA - March 2003

OPHELIA & THE GREAT IDEA:
"... Each song's structure is punk grounded, but pursued like a free-jazz
blowing session. On "You Can Expect Us to Sing," the music mirrors every
lyrical syllable, with quick transitions between guitarist Adam Parks' and
bassist Brent Antal's Guy Picciotto-esque yelps, drummer Nick Tamburro's
buttery beatnik drum taps, even Stomp-like solos in which clanging pots
and pans take center stage. "A Pony for Your Thoughts" incorporates
aggressive three-part melody, à la Fugazi, but keeps things interesting
with abrupt, minimalist song breaks ... None of the songs has a chorus,
but the intricacy and thought put into every composition makes this nibble
of music a delectable meal."
- Janna Chan, Seattle Weekly - Seattle, WA - February 2004

KIRK UNIT:
"Kirk Unit is one of those bands with one guy doing everything, and that guy
is Jasun Hadaway. Hadaway creates aural landscapes, incorporating soft
guitar melodies, electronic drumbeats, noise samples and whispered vocals
on his debut self-titled CD. It's mellow indie-pop with shades of bands
like the Cure ("Downcraft" is almost too blatantly borrowed from said
band) and Mogwai..."
- Dan Halligan, Tablet - Seattle, WA - July 2003

REDFISH BLUEFISH:
"... Filled with rich, smoky vocals, intricate lyrics, and an impressive range
of styles "Sad Songs, Excessively Dressed" is a damn good listen. From
angsty Ani DiFranco-esque tunes to quiet acoustics to acappella harmonies
that smack of everything from mountain folk to renaissance madrigals, it's
widely appealing without losing its focus."
- Erin Ryan, Boise Weekly - Boise, ID - September 2003

  • I like every band on here!
    author: Dan Williams

Rarely do I find a compilation cd in which I don't find myself skipping tracks. This cd taps almost every emotion and it feels like each band flows well with the next. I gave 4 stars as I felt a couple songs could've been recorded better but overall it sounded quite good.
