Folk music lovers say New Zealand-based singer-songwriter Helen Dorothy “has the gift of taking everyday events and spinning them into absolute gems of songs”. She creates “beautiful windows into things she has noticed about the environment, its wildlife and people”. Heart-rending songs, delivered in unusual guitar tunings, "may have the toughest amongst you swallowing hard…” But there are quirky themes too!
“Dorothy is an acoustic folk artist in an honest sense…her songs are left to speak for themselves, providing tales and observations, thoughts and commentaries.”
The making of her debut CD, she says, was really about cleaning out the attic to make room for fresh material. 'The Going Away' was launched in April 2009, and whilst predominantly voice and guitar, it subtly draws on the diverse backgrounds (including classical, jazz and Celtic-folk) of some of Wellington’s finest musicians.
“The reward from these 'alone' kind of albums comes in the sad, thought-provoking and beautiful places they can take you to...."
(NZ Musician magazine, Oct/Nov 2009)
“This CD is not trying to push talent in my face with over engineering and instrumentation; she is simply singing and playing her haunting songs...."
(Julian Ward, Musician, 2009)
