Not available for many decades until now, this 1964 album is a real lost gem. It features the smokey vocals of Helen Merrill, backed by the guitar stylings of legendary players Charlie Byrd and Jimmy Rainey. Also the fine drumming of Osie Johnson, and other music notables like Keter Betts and Jimmy Giuffre in the mix.
Mostly in the English language, Merrill also sings in several foreign languages on the album, including Japanese, Italian, Portuguese.
If you like smooth vocals, and an album that will set a very romantic mood for that special evening, this CD is for you.

Traditional songs from US, Europe and Japan
author: Yoichiro Kishimoto
This is a precious album by Ms. Helen Merrill singing traditional and folk songs from US, Europe and Japan. Charlie Byrd's guitar is weaving quietly. An old Spanish song "Romance de L'Amour" became famous in the French movie "Forbidden Games" is there. An old Scottish song "John Anderson, My Jo" by Robert Burns appears on the last track.

In many ways a strange. mixed bag collection of songs, many with a somewhat folky edge. All of it sung with great warmth and feeling by Ms. Merrill. Worth the price, I think, just for the wonderful "I Left My Heart Behind"!
