Producer's Notes

It is believed by many (myself included), that given ample time and financial resources, one could take a ruptured goose into a state-of-the-art recording studio and come out with tomorrow's next pop singing sensation. That is, of course, if the fowl in question is under the age of eighteen, can dance and has a reasonably cute tail-feather. Honk!
It wasn't long after meeting Helen Slater that I knew the kind of album I wanted to make on her. My only question: would the artist agree? Happily (and bravely) she did. This record (yes, I still call them that) is recorded completely "live in the studio" in Nashville Tennessee. Meaning, everyone, including Helen, played together, at the same time, in the same room and, believe it or not, in the same key. Even her vocal was cut right there behind the piano at the moment of tracking. Thus, you will hear pedal noise, You will hear feet stomping. You will hear extemperaneous utterances. You will hear what can only be described as Helen having a litter of kittens behind the piano. Could we have taken it out? Sure. Did we? No. Why? Because who cares. We're making music here, not shoes. Consequently what you get to experience is a truly gifted singer-songwriter surrounded by somne of the finest musicians in the world-organically, spontaneously and authentically. No tricks.

I'm very proud to have played a small part in the making of this album. It has been one of the most rewarding an creative experience of my career. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed making.

    I got a copy of Crosswords when Helen visited a local comic book convention. I simply bought it as something to have signed. Then I listened to it. It was beautiful. A little jazzy, and very thoughtful, but not a bit melancholy. Then I quickly got "One Of These Days" from CD Baby, and my only complaint was it ended too soon. This collection was just one big musical smile. Helen was a very good actress, but after hearing these CDs, I think think she might have finally found her true calling.

    It's not often you get an album by a performer from another discipline and find it to be great! Many Actors and Actresses believe themselves to be singers. In Helen's case, the belief is well held. This album is just mellow and wonderful. I highly recommend it!

    Really did love the CD. The voice of Helen Slater is truly a sweet voice, and I love the fact that she writes all of her songs. Gives the songs more meaning.     I first meet Helen when my wife Darlene and I worked as Helens assistants and provided her motor home for her on the "HAPPY TOGETHER" film shoot. Darlene was 5 months pregnant with our first child and Helen was always concerned and MOST carrying for Darlene during the crazy and hectic schedule of her filming. I knew at that time that Helene was a VERY SPECIAL individual and once you hear the music that pours from her heart and soul you will know what I mean. Helene Slater is not only a GREAT muscian but a GREAT humanr being.

  • The magic of Helen music and the birds

    I had a magic experience with this CD.I live in Brazil, in a small town in the south, beyond the Amazon forest and my garden is always full of butterflies and colorfull birds, because of the tropical forest nearby. One morning I put the first track of Helen´s album, Greenland, to play in the stereo and then I notice that the birds in the garden didn´t stop to sing, they keep singing with Helen. It was pure magic and I bet that when Helen recorded this, on a Nashville studio, she never thought that it could be played with an assemble of tropical birds in the background. It was a inspiration for my work and as I say to my friend, "One of these days" is pure gold and you will enjoy it even without tropical birds and in any part of the world

    I stumbled onto this CD, listend to the samples and ordered it. The recording has just the right amount of production and mastering, so that it sounds like a nice afternoon spent playing in the living room with friends. The writing is good, and emotions very sincere. The piano, all the supporting musicans, and the vocals excellent. I will probably come back and enjoy this periodically for years. My guess is that it will endure as a favorite.

    As a fan of folks like Joni Mitchell and Carole King, it was only natural that 'One of These Days' should appeal to me. Of course, it helps that I've been a fan of Helen as an actress. Her clear, sweet soprano soars, and her piano-playing skilful and inspiring. Favourite tracks include (but are not limited to): 'Love Comes In', 'Robin's Egg', 'Greenland' and 'Typical'. Definitely check this CD out!

    The delightful music, lyrics, and performance contained in this CD will suprise and delight. The rule in the music industry, as in the motion picture industry, is mediocrity. What is most suprising in Ms. Slater's work is that she should have passed through both these industries and miraculously still offer such a bold and enjoyable exception to the ordinary.     I've been a fan of Helen Slater since way back, so I knew she was a great pianist and singer. What I didn't know was that she was such a great songwriter as well. She really impressed me. My favorite song in the CD is "Touch and Go" which has become one of my favorite songs of all time, but I love all the others as well. An excellent CD from start to finish. I hope her next CD is just as good. If you've followed Helen's career like I have, you'd know this lady could teach bees a thing or two about work ethics and what it means to work your butt off for what you want, and it shows so beautifully in this CD.     This is the perfect recording to take with you while relaxing outdoors. I like to take it to the pool or beach and listen while watching the world go by. The sound of the acoustic instruments, together with Helen's beautiful voice, is gorgeous. However, when you couple them with everything that a nice day has to offer, the result is a truely wonderful experience.

    I'm listening to Helen sing as I write this; inspired. I'm a listener; have been since the early age of...oh, about 5. And although listening to this voice (Helen) may sound reminiscent of others, such as Carole King or even Joni Mitchell, she is not. C.S. Lewis once said that we are part of of those we have read. With this in mind, That same note can be heard, and even seen, in the beautiful voice and talent of Helen's, yet she is uniquely her own. We draw and learn from those we have admired and enjoyed while growing up, but we are not those. Unique is what God Himself would say is "One of a kind." It seems rare in today's music to find a heartfelt album with songs *both* written and sung by the artist, but this CD shows that this kind of artist still exists; it is a true gem.     The first impression of this CD is the recording quality: very live and open, but warm and genuine. Helens voice is clear and present, with excellent phrasing and pitch, expressing emotion with a lot of subtleties. The music is quite complex, well performed, with a lot of 70's influences. The lyrics are wonderful, sometimes funny, baffling, charming, and sometimes heartbreaking.

    This is just a good piece of work generally. I like the feeling that you get from it being recorded live, because you can hear the talent on show, just plain, without any technical messing round. I think that Helen Slater has a very pleasant voice and that her compositions carry it beautifully. She has done a good job of matching her vocal style and music, so that everything sits nicely. This album is very relaxing and is good for easing stress. I can definately see a similarity between this piece and the work of some of the great 70s songstresses. Fantastic.

    I had no idea that Helen Slater was a singer and a good piano player, too. Listening to this CD has been a really good experience.     Growing up in the 60's/70's I'm a big fan of Carole King, and Helen is able to catch the same personal flavor. Unlike the many actor/singer wannabees, you're the real deal. Kudos to you Helen.
