It is hard to describe the feeling of playing music live with great musicians. "Ecstatic" comes to mind also "pure joy". In so many ways I have been a closeted musician. After graduating high school I really did put songwriting on the back burner while I made movies. Then on it's own, the drive to write kept rearing it's head. First in sporadic, fits and starts, then in a slightly more cohesive manner (I wrote a musical based on The Ugly Duckling). Ultimately, I was led to a class at UCLA that officially turned the light on. Making this record in Nashville was an inspiring experience in that I was surrounded by the most crazy, talented musicians, and a producer,(Phil Swann), who had the insight to record it live. This allowed such spontaneity and spirit and for all of us in the room to feel that we were part of a living breathing experience. There weren't hours spent on compressing a drum sound, or days spent re-mixing a song. I do think some day I might like to work a little more slowly (We recorded the whole thing in a day, mixed and mastered in a week!!) but being on a budget allowed for a lot of grace and magic to happen. The songs are reminiscent of a bygone era. Inspired by tin-pan alley and a whole lot of 13 chords!! I hope you enjoy CROSSWORD as much as I enjoyed making it.
Peace,
Helen

Ooo la la
author: George T. StandishHelen is a breath of fresh air. Her voice is sweet and pure. You can close your eyes, listen and sense her beauty. She is absolutley the prettiest girl I have ever seen. Knowing now that she can write and sing makes it that much harded to take. My wife is getting tired of catching me on line checking out Helen's accomplishments. Wow !
I love Helen
author: Jerry HodgeHelen Slater has a fantastic voice. She is as talented as she is beautiful. I am a freelance writer. I recently wrote an article on my top ten most beautiful women in the world and Helen was number three on my list. I guess inner city guys also have great taste (SMILE). Helen is a remarkable women.
Very Nice
author: jeff skovranI was at the Fx comic book show in orlando.I got this for a copy to have her to sign for me,but her voice is incredible. This compliments and completes all her talents wonderfully.I am going to buy her first album and cant wait to listen to it. She went from a early heart throb in my younger years to a wonderfully, beautiful and attractive woman with a beautiful voice. thanks for the picture. Just a fan.
Up,up and away!
author: StephenHelen sounds exactly the way she did in supergirl. The same unique commanding voice, and though decades later, she sounds just as young and fresh. That youthful vibrancy shines forth in this album. I was amazed to learn she wrote, sings and plays the piano, she truly is a supergirl. Her control of voice is excellent and her presentation very deliberate and honest. Recording all the musicians live in the same room makes a big difference with the energy and spontaneity. I enjoyed this disc and will listen to it again and again. You won't be disappointed in the purchase.
Helen is definitely the most outstanding singer and actress ever!

Amazing! Helen Slater does it again!
author: Craig M. HinchHelen Slater continues to impress me with her work. Although pop and other genres have their place, it's really a breath of fresh air when an artist writes and performs in such a way as Ms. Slater does. We don't have a bunch of vocoders or other studio devices; we get a raw voice that is passionate in her music and the emotions that are in the songs are naturally reflected in her singing. The songs take you on a journey and end where you want to take the journey again. So buy this CD and get ready to press "repeat"!

Your CD is SUPER, Girl!!
author: Sean McHughHelen Slater's Crossword is the best CD I've purchased in years! The clear crytal lilt in her voice, the magnificent songs(She wrote every one). Her band is fantastic too. Listening to her perfect phrasing and each beautiful note whisks me away to a place deep inside of me that I haven't visited since my younger days when I still believed in soulmates, romance, ....and falling in love on a NY subway was not out of the question. I first fell in love with Ms. Slater when she was the girl in the red cape. Now I've fallen in love all over again with the girl in the red scarf. CD's don't get much better than this! CD Baby is a great company also. My order arrived quickly and without damage.
Helen has done it again!

author: Pat RomeroJust loved all the songs on this CD. Also loved the fact that Helen Slater wrote her own songs, and she has a very clear, sweet voice. Also loved the instruments playing behind her. Was glad to find this on the CD Baby website.
Very impressive! Beautiful voice and great lyrics!
author: Steve StandleyI really liked how the jazz sound took me back to another era. The lyrics sounded very personal, almost if I was reading a diary. Helen has a voice that can sound childlike one minute, and then sexy the next. A fine 2nd effort, and I'm looking forward to #3!
Highly recommended
author: JGSuch a pleasant surprise. Great voice, great musicians, great songs. Anymore is a standout, but there's really no weak link here at all. I'm so glad i took a chance on buying this.
HELEN IS TRULLY AWESOME!!!!
author: Christopher MartinezLove it, love it, love it!!!! I had no idea Helen could sing. The music is wonderful and Helen's voice is heaven sent. Thank you Helen, you're a genius!!!!
Album similar to Manilow's Paradise Cafe & Swing Street
author: MarcyAll her songs told a very different story with a lovely melody. Crossword reminds me of Barry Manilow's 1984 LP 2:00 a.m. Paradise Cafe and his 1987 Swing Street LP. Very jazzy tunes that was done with class. Helen sounds like a more polished Norah Jones and Joni Mitchell.
I Got Lucky
author: John GrindeyFrom watching Helens films I new she was a good actress, now I know from both of her albums she is a excellent songwriter with a beautiful voice.
Great Album
author: OliverA slight change in style for Helen, "Crossword" contains a more Jazzy approach. This album is wonderfully put together, so if you love light-Jazz then this CD is perfect for you.

author: Paul HarrisI really like the Crossword CD, fantastic stuff from a very talented artist. I like everything about the material, from clever little rhymes to the quality of the voice.
Surprisingly Good
author: Steven.Soones@ukonline.co.ukWhen I saw that Helen Slater had released a CD my first impression was; “I didn't even know she could sing”. I along with many others only know her from the movies which she has appeared in. I however, decided to take a chance and see if she is as talented at singing as she is at acting. Well after hearing the CD in my opinion…... It was Fantastic. A very nice way to rewind after a hard day at the office. Great songs beautifully sung. You are truly talented. Will certainly look out for the next one. It’s a pity you haven’t come to the UK to perform....... (one day!!!!)
fantastic!
author: L PhillipsAnother album, another success. Here's looking forward to the 3rd one (don't leave it too long!)
Another Superb Album from Super Helen!
author: John Braines (UK)Another superb album from Helen, I find it amazing that she writes all the words and lyrics herself! A very pleased listener for Helens 2nd album!
DELICIOUS...EVERY NOTE...DELICIOUS!
author: Todd SherryI love this CD. It brings great joy to my heart. Helen Slater's voice is so pure and divine and her songs are smart, fun, full of love, and joyous. I can't recommend it enough.
Wonderful album, a sheer delight.
author: Fred SuffetLovely songs, beautifully sung; excellent arrangements and first-rate recording quality. All in all, a real treat--and a long way past being a present-day version of 70s folk-rock. One song, 'New York in June,' goes sraight onto the top shelf of great, hip NY songs, and on it Ms. Slater shows that she is also a fine jazz vocalist.

Thouroughly enjoying the lift.
author: KilpyThis follow up is really showing how she is growing as an artist. Each song is a journey. I have it in rotation with some other greats and each time one of the songs of the CD rotates in...the clean lines and beautiful voice gives me pause.
Wonderful follow-up
author: RegTo compare with her first album: Same lovely voice, same clever, conversational, observational, diary like lyrics. Same great clean, fresh, well performed, well-produced recordings. Much more of a light jazz style, more upbeat, the instrumentalists are little more in front. It seems that Helen was very careful to keep the second CD at the same quality level as the first, while including some fresh ideas. And she achieved it.
Excellent
author: Jesús MárquezEither if you´re at your home in a rainy afternoon, or walking by the streets of your city, you´d want to listen to her delicated and relaxing voice, because it makes you dream. Thanks, Helen, for bringing us more inspired songs!
Close your eyes and enjoy
author: jorge califeHelen Slater is back with a new collection of her beautiful songs, this time in a more standard, jazz oriented style. Like the first album, One of these days, Crossword can be enjoyed in different levels. There is the songs, the music, the singing. Helen's voice sounds like an angel, heavenly. The music catches you and the word invite us to dream. She write her songs painting pictures with words, fishing deep in her psyche for feelings and colourful imagery. So close your eyes and embark in this musical adventure with stops at Paris, New York(in June) and the Amazon. Lovely!
One hot singer

Sit back and come along for the ride
author: QuenyarLike welcoming a good friend back after they've been gone too long, this music warms and delights. The whimsy of the artist fills this second work and leaves one waiting breathless for the third.
