Album Notes

It is hard to describe the feeling of playing music live with great musicians. "Ecstatic" comes to mind also "pure joy". In so many ways I have been a closeted musician. After graduating high school I really did put songwriting on the back burner while I made movies. Then on it's own, the drive to write kept rearing it's head. First in sporadic, fits and starts, then in a slightly more cohesive manner (I wrote a musical based on The Ugly Duckling). Ultimately, I was led to a class at UCLA that officially turned the light on. Making this record in Nashville was an inspiring experience in that I was surrounded by the most crazy, talented musicians, and a producer,(Phil Swann), who had the insight to record it live. This allowed such spontaneity and spirit and for all of us in the room to feel that we were part of a living breathing experience. There weren't hours spent on compressing a drum sound, or days spent re-mixing a song. I do think some day I might like to work a little more slowly (We recorded the whole thing in a day, mixed and mastered in a week!!) but being on a budget allowed for a lot of grace and magic to happen. The songs are reminiscent of a bygone era. Inspired by tin-pan alley and a whole lot of 13 chords!! I hope you enjoy CROSSWORD as much as I enjoyed making it.
Peace,
Helen

So I sound like Tony the Tiger from the Frosted Flakes commercial. Once again, Helen Slater produces a sequel and unlike most movie sequels, I like it just as good as the first album. I can't say really which one I like better. Some of my favorites on this album include: "Stone Porch", "Crossword", "Anymore", "Below the Line", "Swizzle", "I Wouldn't Mind" and my favorite, "Amazon". I'm glad that she has so much fun with these songs. I would definitely recommend this album. Keep up the good work.

As most other people I know Helen from starring in Supergirl (and other films) but I was really pleased to find out some years ago that she is also a gifted singer and song writer. She has starred in some TV movie that featured an original song of hers which I liked so I purchased her albums and am really pleased with the result. I think it's alright to compare her music with the Carole King singer-songwriter style (as well as others) and especially nowadays it's good to know there are still people who work in that style. Maybe there could be some Christmas CD with original songs in the future? I think that would really suit her. All the best for the future and keep up the good work!

A little more Helen..

I love Helen\'s voice, every song she sings carries with it a rich, vibrant emotional quality.. You can certainly tell she is loving the \'stories\' she is singing for us.. But, I think that, sometimes, the instruments get in the way of her breathy vocals.. I found, especially on \'Any Day Now\', the piano often seems to compete for \'top billing\'.. Don\'t get me wrong, I\'m not saying she has a little \'fairy light\' voice, not so, but it\'s hard to outdo an instrument that can be as loud as a piano.. This is not the only track in which I felt several of the instruments were overiding her vocals.. But, all in all, she is a superb singer and I give the album 4 big stars!
