Album Notes

For "On Return" R. Scott wrote a song cycle about late night dalliances and restless souls. Blending jazz, blues, cabaret and pop styles, he produced his dark, bluesy debut as a singer/songwriter.

Scott formed The Helmut Stein Experience with saxophonist/vocalist Philip Golla in 2000. His gruff, r&b-infused vocal and keyboard style and Golla's lyrical sax work being the bands' foundation. Though issued under the moniker "The Helmut Stein Experience", "On Return" is really a duo project with guest players and vocalists.

"On Return" garnered 4 nominations (Best Blues Album; Best Blues Song(s) - Big, Bad Feeling, The Fool; Best Spoken Word - 365) for the 2004 Just Plain Folks Music Awards.

***************

"...a well-produced, multi-dimensional CD." - Patrick Ferris/HotBands.com

"...every track is a standout, if only because it's all real music, rooted in real aural history, a nod to the decades before poseurs and publicists took over everything." - Rich Kane/OC Weekly

"Keyboardist and principal songwriter R. Scott has the musical chops and artistic-minded voice that echoes the insightful satire of Randy Newman's best work." - Robert Kinsler/The Orange County Register

"A very solid release, and nice to hear a contemporary group staying true to the values of Soul without resorting to pure pastiche." - David Steele/Modculture.com

I've played this disc twice now on my Blues show and it has generated over six inquiries as to whom they are. This disc takes many chances to sound unique in a world of cookie cutters. They succeed in many ways. From scowling musical moods to lilting angelic singing, The Helmut Stein Expierience gently removes the wax from your ears and clobbers you over the head with something fresh...

Soulful blues and jazz!

On Return is the vision of vocalist, composer, producer and keyboardist R. Scott. Other talented musicians on bass, drums, horns and vocals join R. Scott to create an eclectic selection of material. On Return is primarily a blues collection melding with deep soul, jazz and experimental sounds. The music is the soundtrack of the darker side of life including defeat and resignation. This diverse ten-track collection spans stark keyboard/organ driven tracks with subtle vocals to full blown productions with rhythm and horn sections. The title track 'On Return' features the Wurlitzer 200 blending with layered rhythms, harmonizing vocals and sassy horns. This track is tight and a prime example of the fine chemistry captured on this CD. 'Slow Suicide' has a smooth dark sound that showcases a cool tenor sax solo and expressive vocals. 'Overload' is full of deep soft beats, delicate brass including the flugelhorn and vivid vocals. The Helmut Stein Experience mixes smoky shades, creative soloing, diverse vocals and first class musicianship.
