Album Notes

Robin Henkel Bad Bongos

"Bad Bongos" features Robin Henkel's quintet of twin saxophones, guitar, bass and drums. Three vocal tunes are his own stylized versions of blues covers. The main direction of this recording is Robin's original writing and arranging which is mostly jazz influenced funk. Robin can always be counted on for a dark yet querky sweet melody played over an anxious funk groove.

To give you and idea about this stuff, there's a rhumba version of Willie Dixon's "Built For Comfort," a funkish styling of John Coltrane's "Some Other Blues," an up tempo jazz swing rendition of Big Jay McNeely's "All That Wine Is Gone," and a beautiful wedding of horns and old western steel guitar on Robin's original "Mahtochiquala."

Robin's love for Miles Davis, Bob Wills, slide and steel guitar music creates a unique art that is recognizable as "his own"--all grown and blended from deep rooted American style.

Robin's previous two CD's "Acoustic Blues" and "Highway" were awarded "Best Blues CD" at the San Diego Music Awards. They are also available on CD Baby.
