Here is a composer/arranger in the first place, good for varying spheres achievement, with the sections not as blocks face each other, but are intertwined in many ways, with surprising sound colours as result.
Got the album the other day, and have been listening to it nonstop!
Wonderful writing. So musical, and also innovative. Loved the twists
and turns in many of the charts, and the hip dissonances that resolve
in unexpected ways. The band is fantastic!
I loved your take on Stella too
I'm going to alert the college and advanced high school jazz directors
that I know to your writing.......

About the music:
Distrust All Rules - Henri Gerrits
Pianist Alfred Brendel wrote in his biography: “Distrust all rules! Never apply rules without asking yourself if they truly comply with the musical character and context”.
As a composer you always have to deal with the past; so much has already been composed. To be able to chose your own path you must start over and over again. With each composition you search for other forms and melodies.
By ignoring all rules you increase your chances of creating something new.
“Distrust All Rules” is a groovy and cheerful composition with solos played by Job Helmers on baritone, Vincent Veneman on trombone and Klaas van Donkersgoed on drums.
Threepression - Henri Gerrits
“Threepression” is a combination of two words: three-quarter time and depression. It is a tranquil composition with exciting sounds and rhythms. The piano sounds at the beginning of the composition are inspired by two Igor Strawinsky chords.
Solos are played by Gerlo Hesselink on soprano and Dirk Balthaus on piano. At the end of “Threepression” a great depression arises with exciting piano sounds by Dirk Balthausen and drumfills by Klaas van Donkersgoed.
Easy Job - Henri Gerrits
Job Helmers asked me to compose a song for him that really fits him. A fantastic challenge to capture “Job” in a musical melody. The result was “Easy Job”. “Easy Job” is based on 4 scales: Bbmaj, Gbmaj, D7 and Bbmaj.
Eleven – Seven - Henri Gerrits
“Eleven – Seven” refers to November 11th, the day my wife Gera and I got married. Like in each marriage going through different and new phases, new melody lines appear in “Eleven – Seven”. “Eleven – Seven” starts with a swing-feel bass line, enhanced by Wolf Schenk on bass trombone. Halfway through “Eleven – Seven” a new phase starts, characterized by the hip-hop groove started by the rhythm section. Solos by Jan-Willem te Kiefte on trumpet and Volker Winck on tenor.
B-Tango - Dirk Balthaus/Arr: Henri Gerrits
“B-Tango” is a beautiful composition by Dirk Balthaus. To arrange “B-Tango” was pure fun. Solos by Dirk Balthaus on piano and Volker Winck on soprano and special attention for lead trumpet players Rini Swinkels and Sander Zweerink.
@ Starlight - Henri Gerrits
“@ Starlight” is based on “Stella by Starlight”. It features tenor saxophone player Volker Winck. In the middle of the song there is an exciting battle between Volker and Klaas van Donkersgoed on drums.
The Very Thought Of You - Ray Noble/Arr. Henri Gerrits
Ray Nobles composition “The very thought of you” was first published in 1934 as a “pop standard”, with performances by great singers like Bing Crosby, Doris Day and Ella Fitzgerald. The idea to make an arrangement of this song came up during a holiday spent at my brother-in-law’s, Jan, who was humming the tune one morning. Dutch summer weather is often bad and this holiday was no exception. A good reason therefore to open my laptop and make the arrangement!
Factory Reset - Henri Gerrits
Whether you like it or not: sometimes electrical appliances get stuck. It goes really well for a long time, but after a while you notice the appliance starts malfunctioning. After complaining for a bit, there is nothing else you can do but press the “Factory reset” button. All settings are back to the way the manufacturer once programmed them, making you happy again. This fact was put into “Factory Reset”. Solos by Gerlo Hesselink on alto and Vincent Veneman on trombone. Try to find the moment where the reset button is pushed in the composition!
