groovin',swinging, warm& fuzzy

this is one fine cd. These songs will relax you, make you smile, and then without knowing it, you will start dancing. Joe Herbek (who also plays alto sax for soul jazz great Melvin Sparks) has taken these bossa classics to heart. His playing runs from sweet to soulful to sexy. The guitarist, Paulo Andre Tavares, from Brasilia, wrote many of the arrangements and evokes the classic bossa nova sound. He is a wonderful player. Vanderlei Pereira, on drums, is one of the top NY brazilian musicians and lays down the groove with spirit and finesse. David Shaich, on acoustic bass provides the solid foundation and a big fat tone to propel this music right where it needs to go. Check it out.

Lovely way to start a day.

Sambossa is lovely. The instruments blend so well, the selection of songs is excellent, and I especially enjoy the selections from Black Orpheus. I push the play button as I awake to the new day, and the lyrical sounds are the first I hear.

A must have for your collection.

I've been going to see Joe Herbek play in the NYC area for twelve years now, so when this album came out I bought a copy right away. I haven't gone a day without listening to it since. Sambossa is all about vibe and groove. These wonderful musicians have captured a feel that puts them right along side the greatest Brazilian artists. While there is plenty of improvisation, the focus of Sambossa is melody. You'll find yourself humming these beautiful tunes long after the CD has finished playing. I bought copies for my parents and my 18 year old niece and they all loved it. You should buy it too. You'll be happy you did.

Sambossa is standout Brazilian jazz with a unique lyrical sound.

Joe Herbek's latest CD is his and the group's best yet. It's a standout among efforts in this area of music by virture of it's warmth, lyricism and creative improvisation. The listener who knows this music will be constantly surprised by the poetry and feeling, the individual choices , and the whole groove. The band is tight, energtic, and elegant, setting up Herbek's rounded warm sax sound as beautifully as a voice in a tropical landscape. Gentle Rain is particularly a gem, but then again, so is every cut.
