Heretic is a new original rock band out of San Diego, CA. Their sound features an emphasis on expert song writing and a consistently melodic approach to every track. Incredible performances by all members of the band raise the bar for newer rock bands on the scene, who more and more often seem to sacrifice ability and musicianship when focusing on melody. Heretic, on the other hand, is quite capable of mixing strong hooks and catchy melodies, with noticeable ability and talent. Heretic manages this without alienating the listener or sounding pretentious. Quite the opposite- Heretic is music for the masses. There is no doubt that this collection of songs was conceived with an emphasis on songwriting and not just any songs…hit songs!
This band can also boast diversity among their strengths. Upon first listen, one can’t help but notice how unique and different each song sounds from the one before it. While clearly a rock band in every sense, the songs shift from straight ahead rockers like “Blue Green Dream” to mellow and introspective songs like “Bombs Away” and “Blue Mesa,” the latter of which could be considered rock, mainstream, folk/roots/Americana, blues, adult contemporary, and alternative, all at the same time- a true crossover hit. There’s also no doubt that the band has an affinity for the heavier side of rock as well, which is featured in tracks like “Burn Away,” “Breakdown,” and “Fires of Babylon.” All in all, Heretic seems to embody all things rock in a very tasteful and appealing way. There’s some degree of mainstream, but not too mainstream. There’s heavy, but it’s not too heavy or too consistent for the band to be considered metal or even exclusively hard rock. Their sound is different, fresh, contemporary and unique, but somehow instantly classic and strangely familiar all at once. This is the inception of a band that’s truly destined for greatness.
