Album Notes

The Hermeneutics
“Storehouses”
CK Records, 2008

This Philadelphia band’s debut album has a solid rock base in eclectic styles. Many of the eleven tracks explore themes of biblical and social justice. The album features contributing artists Oppose and Anyelis Cruz.

All three members were born in southern Africa, and the band was formed at Eastern University in Philadelphia.

The album opens with three tracks (“Baptism,” “The Table,” “Rule of Christ”) on the theme of “Body Politics,” inspired by theologian John Howard Yoder. The jazz-oriented “Tender Mercy” combines smooth piano and guitar licks. The upbeat “Crazy Reign” and “Loyal to Your Will” incorporate jazz and blues organ and cutting guitar solos. Rapper Oppose takes “Every Voice” on a high-energy run that breaks into a guitar vignette of the anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

The title track, “Storehouses,” is a critique of materialism based on the words of Jesus. “You Say You Are” and “Como Ciervo” (featuring Anyelis Cruz) are introspective explorations of faith. The closing track is a resounding call for justice based on Amos 5.

The Hermeneutics blend skilled instrumentals and thoughtful, provocative lyrics. The result is a tight, cohesive rock album with depth and soul.
