In Spiritual Jazz I've taken some old time hymns and given them a jazz arrangement. The inspiration for this album came from Hank Jones album Steal Away and Cyrus Chestnut's album Blessed Quietness. All proceeds go toward feeding the elderly and disabled in our area.
This album was recorded in Penticton, B.C. on a Steinway concert grand piano at the local concert hall and most of the songs were done in one take to keep a feeling of a live concert
Just a Closer Walk has been played by a lot of dixieland bands over the years and I used to play this with a great trumpet player in Madison, Wis by the named of Doc Dehaven.
I Love You Lord was a favorite praise song in many churches and I thought I would add a festive dance like feeling to it.
Morning Star has a latin jazz feel and has also been sung as a praise song.
Song for Dottie is sort of a bossa nova and is dedicated to my wife Dottie who spent her birthday in Penticton while I did this recording.
Jesus Loves Me This I Know was arranged with children in mind and has a feel the kids could clap hands to.
Meditation on 911 was composed by me after 9/11 and has a more contemporary jazz feel.
The net proceeds from this Cd are being donated to assist the Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels and the Union Gospel Mission.
