ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Heshima is a phenomenal Vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter/composer who is pushing the limits of modern music with his unique blend of Jazz, Latin, Gospel, sould, and World Music influences into a whole new genre he calls "Organic Swirlz". Whether laying down ferocious bass over Jazz/Nu Jazz, Hip Hop/R & B grooves, or melting audiences with his silky, seductive voice in English or Spanish, Heshima is totally at home in any genre.

Heshima has shared the stage and/or recorded with some of the world's greatest starts inlcuding Patti Labelle, La India, Avery Sharpe, James Carter, William Parker, Quest Love, Amira Baraka, Owen Brown "Fidlaa", Marion Meadows, and HBO's Mahogany Browne to name just a few. Now, with His bands, "Heshima & I Am" and "Heshima and the Urban Soul Orchestra" Heshima defies boundaries and leads his audience on a musical journey.

The Awakening, is Heshima's debut as a leader for Souljourn Music Group. This fiery artist combines totally unique renditions of three jazz classics with breathtaking original compositions, stellar performances by some of music's greatest young talents(including Avery Sharpe), to deliver a one of a kind Jazz/Nu Jazz classic.

Heshima is slated to release a new soul classic entitled "The Balance" in Spring 2007. This album will feature the songs, stories, and soul of Heshima as he sings his song to you. Watch for this and much more from Heshima and Souljourn Music Group

Sexy, sultry, but strong music which moves the soul...
I saw Heshima singing with Patti Labelle about 2 years ago in Long Beach California and was moved by his sultry voice. I happened to be googling artists from NYC and he came up on C.D. Baby.I instantly went to check out "The Awakening". As a non-jazz fan, Heshima's skillful blend of several musical traditions including latin, straight ahead, and contemporary jazz made it so palatable to me. I really appreciate his version of Passion Dance, by McCoy Tyner. He appealed to my appetite for latin music. THen, his smooth, sexy vocals on Afro Blue Captured me. Between his writing, his arranging, singing, and bass playing, Heshima offers the total package on this C.D. I would definately recommend it to any real music fan.

Heshima came to San Juan Puerto Rico to play some shows, and I bought a copy of "The Awakening" before the show. I had no idea what I was going to hear. I was glad after the show, that I had bought my copy, because I ran to my car and listened to it all the way home. His playing and singing on this c.d. is soulful, strong, and sultry. His compositions appeal to someone like me who doesn't know a whole lot about the technical aspects of music. I just know what I like, and I loved the awakening. His diverse repetoire and approach to music, makes it a interesting the whole way through. I would definately recommend it to anybody who is just interested in great music.

Cutting-edge jazz, soul, and funk!
I was given this CD by a friend and I didn't know what to expect, given that most modern Jazz is either doing boring "Return to the Old" tributes or "out of this world" fusion. Heshima knows how to "keep it real" with the jazz crew/scene, while giving the listener what they really crave for: good, soulful music. His chops are impeccable (think a modern Jaco, with Latin influences and a good sense of the Jazz and R&B traditions) and his compositions are inventive.

This is one jazz CD that will be playing on my player for QUITE a long time.

Dope C.D. with something for everyone, including the non jazz audience
Heshima has been making great music with so many people for so long that it was thrilling for me to see his c.d. finally out. The Awakening, is the culmination of Heshima's artistic and personal journey up to that point in his life when he released the c.d. My personal favorites are "The Awakening" with it's smooth Soprano Sax, and driving Bass line. His Solo on the tune is blazin'! Harlem Princess, is remeniscent of Miles Davis, or Wynton Marsalis at 3 o'clock in the morning on a New York Street combined with Heshima's great poem of the same title serving as the focal point. "End Time Blues", and Heavenly Places, swing hard in the tradition of straight ahead Jazz, while Freedom Jazz dance experiments with funk and Hip Hop roots of the artist. There are some great vocals by Heshima as well on Wade in The Water, and Afro Blue. I would recommend it to anybody who loves good music, and definately checking out a live show as well.
