Album Notes

This swinging combo features vintage vocals from Hetty Kate (Voice/Ukulele), the infectiously tuneful Sam Lemann (Guitar/Ukulele) and warm, shuffling rhythms from Andy Baylor (Guitar) and Leigh Barker (Double Bass). Be captivated by sweet sentimentality, Great American Standards and South-of-the-border melodies as they revisit a selection of favourites. Tipping their hats to jazz duos of the past, such as Barney Kessel and Julie London, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Peggy Lee and Dave Barbour – Sam and Hetty will take you for a joyful ride.

Sam Lemann and Hetty Kate live in Melbourne, Australia - and through a friendship based on fine champagne, a love of cha-cha's and wicked senses of humour this debut album was born. Sam Lemann, Andy Baylor and Leigh Barker often play together around Melbourne as a trio, and when Hetty dropped past one afternoon to sing as a guest it seemed a fine lineup for the album! Recorded over two rainy nights in November 2008, the album has a warm, live sound - all at once comfortable, intimate and fun!

Hetty Kate is a jewel, a revelation. His way of singing - and his voice - takes us directly to the 50´s . Doris Day and Peggy Lee are obvious and immediate references. However she rescues the vocal style of singers of that decade, too little known: Beverly Kenney and Lucy Ann Polk. Especially the last . She deserves a better record, with denser arrangements, some piano, a bit of a tenor sax, a trumpet . She reminds me Ana Kruger(Brazilian singer from Delicatessen band) etc. Stacey today, as American Stacey Kent (who lives in England), Canadian Diane Nalini, Texas born Kat Edmonson and Brazilian Ana Kruger, from Delicatessen Band. A must. don´t miss her!
