Album Notes

Volume I is the first release by the The Hickman-Dalton Gang, featuring Johnny Hickman of Cracker and Jim Dalton of the Railbenders. The record rings out with sounds of the Old West, midnight rides, strong drink and murder on both sides of the Mexican border.

The project is a true instrumental, vocal, and writing collaborative, though the elder statesman Hickman defers gladly at times to Dalton's coal-fired baritone vocals. With only a handful of gigs under their belt, the duo has already been invited to open for the legendary Billy Joe Shaver, and Roger Clyne's Circus Mexicus in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

Outstanding, intense masterpiece

"Volume I" is six songs of vivid storytelling over mostly just two acoustic guitars. There's a mournful air throughout the songs, with the mood intensified by the beautiful, melodic vocals of Jim Dalton and Johnny Hickman. "Old Border Town" and "Mexican Jail" give us a little something different with a musically Mexican flair, and the sadness of "Whiskey Rain" is accented by a lonely harmonica. This album is a masterpiece from start to end.

Original Sound with an Addicting Bite

Masterfully written and recorded songs that you won't be able to turn off. Jim's vocals are smooth and deep with a full tone that goes down hot. Johnny's vocals are equally impressive with a smooth and dry, yet biting tone that will have you feeling like you're in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Either way, you'll find yourself hitting the repeat button over and over. The music is primal, and the lyrics are addicting. Western-outlaw-mariachi-country? It truly is an original. Buy it! You'll love it. Can't wait for more from these guys!

The problem with this album is that it is too short.

Great stuff here by Johnny Hickman of Cracker, and Jim Dalton of The Railbenders (also now with Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers.) Word is that Volume 2 is on the way, or at least in the works. I'm not a fan of modern country music, but I like the old Hank Sr/Johnny Cash/Buck Owens stuff. This is not exactly like any of that, but genuine in its own way. Real music by real (Justin O) pickers.
