Album Notes

Hidari Mae is a band from Seattle, Washington. Born out of songs recorded by Andy and his brother Josh in California, the band took shape by using these songs as a starting point and building them into something new and more collaborative. All three members of this band have been involved in the music scene in Seattle for a few years, recording and playing in other music projects such as Damien Jurado and Gathered in Song, Rosie Thomas, and Dear Darling. For Andy, Eric, and Greg, Hidari Mae is a creative outlet outside of other musical endeavors, but of equal importance. They have been playing in various music venues around the Seattle area, and will continue to play as well as record and make plans to tour.

Their debut CD spans a time frame of about two and a half years of writing and recording. Though each track exists almost on it?s own sonically, the record moves fluidly from idea to idea. The contrast of sad lyrics and slow-moving but catchy melodies create an atmosphere that seems only to be understood by those who have heard it.

The record?s sound and influence varies heavily. With elements of sampling and synthesizers to the more organic sounds of the accordion and acoustic guitar, it tries it?s best to keep your attention through it?s fourteen-song lifespan. Hidari Mae makes use of a variety of instruments including an omnichord, a theremin, a long list of synthesizers, a vocoder, and a toy piano. Thanks for listening.

Sometimes, in life. things are best said simply. Without clutter, without excess, without complexity and simply with the necessary instrumentals and bare vocals- case in point, Hidari Mae. Lush, colorful and with a touch of quirk, these songs resonate with stripped-down substance, the pulse of the heartbeat and the wave of the breath. Different, but sweet.
