Barbara Higbie Biography

A Grammy-nominated, Bammy award winning singer-songwriter, pianist, composer and multi-instrumentalist, Barbara has performed on more than 60 albums, including 3 songs for Carlos Santana’s latest release and a cut with Bonnie Raitt on the tribute to Malvina Reynolds. She has recorded for Windham Hill Records since 1982, with 4 solo, 4 duo and 3 group recordings to her credit as well as contributing to 10 compilations that have sold in the millions. The Washington Post named her first solo outing “Top Ten of the Year”, Performing Songwriter Magazine named her second solo release in it’s Top Ten. She has performed with Bonnie Raitt, Terry Riley, the Kronos Quartet, Cris Williamson, Bobby McFerrin, David Grisman, Michael Hedges, Greg Brown, Ferron, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Rob Wasserman and a host of others.
Raised in Indiana , at age 13 her family moved to Ghana , West Africa where she studied with master drummer Mustafa Tetty Addy. She later returned to West Africa with a Watson Fellowship to collect traditional music. Barbara started her full-time musical career on the streets of Paris . Now residing in Berkeley , CA with her husband and 5 year old daughter, she has just completed a 40 city national tour and has a new solo release “Alive in Berkeley ”.
