Album Notes

I can't remember the first five years of my life but this is what I was told growing up by my grandfather (Jerome):

"You were born in Charleston, South Carolina, grandma and I came to live you with you, your father and sister after your mom and sister passed away when you were 4. I taught you to read your horoscope every day though you didn't understand what you were talking about."

When I was eight, my dad bought me my very first guitar and tried to teach me how to play. I had no interest, though when I got in trouble, the only "toy" I was left with was that guitar. I picked it up and learned a few chords, then a few songs, and finally wanted to perform at the age of 14 at my high school. I was told, if I play my first show and did well, I would get my first acoustic guitar (what I really wanted all along, thanks Dad). I did just that winning most-talented in what turned out to be a beauty pageant for guys called Striking Viking. It was more of a joke with the format but my talent did shine enough for me to get my first acoustic guitar. I played out more and more, joining a band in college and getting a great following in the area. When it started to become an episode of "Behind The Music"(what a great show!), I went my own way with my best friend/manager at the time, Cassandra and started releasing my own music. I started looking for jobs in NYC to get my music more nationally heard, the day of my last interview for the job, was the day the interviewer's parent passed away. My meeting was canceled and the original day and time was Tuesday morning of September 11th.

After that day, the job market in NYC was bleak, so I moved back to Penn State and started making my own music and touring around. I got recognition in local papers and some LGBT press and more and more folks came out to the shows. Eventually, I went further and further away from Pennsylvania touring all the way to the west coast and back. Releasing more CDs led to bigger opportunities sharing the stage with folks like Cyndi Lauper, Duncan Shiek and India Arie. After 5 years, I didn't know if I was going to stay in music. I was burned to a crisp from driving all over the country going strong for many years. It took about a month or two for me to go through my past and present to start writing my newest release, Resonate. Bringing my life out in the forefront, with references to my family, friends, and those I met on the road, the songs just seem to write themselves. With 10 new songs, I am sure this cd is sure to resonate with those who are also reflecting on their personal situations.

He Only Gets Better
author: David May

It’s not often that one wants to hear a CD a second time the moment one is through listening to it, but such was the case for this listener with *Resonate*. For one thing, his voice is better than ever, very confident, infused with the best of folk and rock traditions. Also, he has made the clear transition from Rock Folk to Folk Rock, a subtle difference perhaps, but one that this listener has always thought best suited Himan’s talent and material. This CD is even more personal than his past efforts – if such a thing is possible. Which is to say that he exposes parts of his heart and soul that he has thus far not tapped in his recorded music. Eric, of course, has never made a secret of being gay, and has touched on gay themes before (e.g., “My Decision” about the very real issue of gay date rape, and the poignant, “Love Shouldn’t Have to Hide). In *Resonate* we hear of both his anger at right-wing homophobia in “Protester’s Song” with the biting lyric: Are you afraid I’d be the hero that you were searching for / And you’d have to thank my faggot ass for winning you, your fucking war); and of his message of hope for queer youth in “Little Boy Blue: Greener pastures surround you / A yellow sun and white clouds too / They don’t understand you, they try to command you). No less moving is “Open the Door”: This is your final shot, show her you are not / Who you have been before / She is crying and trying to love you now / Open the door. If this listener wasn’t already a little in love with Himan, as one often is of musicians and writers that speak to one’s experience, he would be now. More importantly, this listener is glad that Eric Himan is making the kind of music we all need to hear.

Outstanding

I don't know how Himan does it, but this gifted artist has managed to surpass himself with this release. From the angry 'Protest Song' to the bittersweet 'He's Using You,' the cuts run the gamut of emotion and style, all perfectly showcased by that voice, capturing the emotions while maintaining musical perfection. The only thing better than owning this CD is seeing him perform live, which I do whenever he is touring near me. From bluesy ballad to driving rock, the CD captures an artist hitting his prime, with self-awareness and confidence, a master songwriter and performer. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Eric is an amazing talent and this latest release showcases his singing/song writing abilities masterfully. The only thing better than listening to Resonate is hearing him sing these songs live. I cannot recommend this CD highly enough.

Trying to put into words how certain musical talents can talk directly to your soul would take up too much space. Those of you that understand that thought, well, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Eric's music AND performance not only inspires me but also makes me feel so alive. Sharing that talent with all of us only shows what an incredibly gifted and giving individual Eric represents. NOBODY can beat his genuineness or his ingenuity. Thanks, Eric!!
