Album Notes

The Hochimen is a North Texas trio headed by the former leader of the mid 90's band Spot, Reggie Rueffer. With Ed McMahon on guitar and Pete Young on drums, we loosely sketch out Reggie's lyrics and melody with a quirky minimalist abandon, using interesting chord progressions and a lot of cold Coors beer. Recorded in a bucolic setting south of Denton, Texas, in the summer of '01, we spent three days basically capturing our live sound. The lyrics have a poetic sensibility and concern Reggie's losing his Christian religion, the untimely demise of a week-old kitten, the saga of a friend getting his ass kicked in a bar, the perils of television, and death in general. It's good and smart, not just three chords and a pretty face.

What a fantastic CD!! You can check out my review of Reggie's previous rock band, Spot, on Amazon, and even order one of the used copies on there for an extremely cheap price. That will give a little background of why I was so excited to finally be told about Reggie's new band, The Hochimen, from a high school friend of Reggie and Chad Rueffer's named George via email a few weeks ago. I ordered this CD as soon as I realized that it was on here, and for the $5 price, you can't beat that deal! After my third listen, I was totally hooked! I don't really like the slower songs like "My Baby Died Today" or "60-40", because to me Spot was all about songs with a high level of energy and a kickin' groove, in addition to great songs, a high level of production, and impressive vocals. I also didn't much care for the first verse in "My Lame Ass", since it contains a dirty word which I feel detracts from the universal appeal of the song and skipped over it for my first few listens of the album since I was at work and there were other people around. But once I let the song play to the pre-chorus and chorus, that song has become my favorite on this album! I also love "Lil' Dead Limb", "God Is a Flower", "Dream of a Dream", "Do Not Play With the Train", and "Gore Vidal Gomez". Such great songs! I can't imagine hearing any of these songs on the radio, but that's what makes these songs so fantastic! I am disappointed that the website for TheHochimen.com doesn't appear to work any longer, but I pray that this will not be the final rock album from the Rueffer brothers. This is probably the best $5 I've ever spent on a CD before! Highly recommended! - Matt Albright, 8/21/2005
