Once the band was formed in 2006, it didn’t take long for Hogan’s Fountain to start playing live. In fact, much of their sound was forged by early live experimentation. After only 2 practices, they began playing every Tuesday night at the Hideaway Saloon in Louisville, Ky, and never looked back. The Hideaway quickly grew into more gigs, and for the first two years, they played voraciously around town, sometimes gigging as often as 6 or7 times/month. With the first album complete, the band planning a regional tour, and has plans to begin to work on it’s second album w/ Hank Linderman in July2009.
Although lead singer-songwriter Michael Franklin did not start playing music until his early twenties, he had been writing for most of his teenage life. After travelling out west, and an eventual move to Boulder,Co, he began focusing on the craft of writing and playing music. In 2002, he returned to Louisville, performing as a solo artist for about 4 years, until he met Rico Thomas...They clicked immediately.
Rico, also of The Louisville Merry Pranksters, had been a staple of the local and national music scene since the early seventies. As an original member of the Buster Brown Blues band, he played all over the US, and has been billed with a variety of national acts, including ZZ Top, Mountain and Alice Cooper etc. Eager to begin Hogan’s Fountain, Michael and Rico quickly added seasoned guitar player Scott Kiper, and drummer Troy Campbell. In 2007,Kyle Shea took over drum duties, and the band recorded it’s first demo, laying the foundation for what would later become: “Shine Your Light On Me.”
After a slight lineup change introducing Kyle Shea in 2007, and Rick Ennis in 2009, the band has recently settled on 5 full-time members: Michael Franklin (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Rico Thomas (bass), Scott Kiper (lead guitar/vocals), Kyle Shea (drums), and Rick Ennis (percussion). They also plan on adding a full-time keyboard player in the very near future.
