On the surface, HomBru sounds like a blend of Gordian Knot and Tool. They incorporate heavy, Stick-laden grooves and edgy guitar riffs with cerebral lyrics that occasionally break into growly Bill Hicks-style vocal flourishes.

December 1, 2002 review of Ingredients by Chad Hutchison, Ghostland.com

“HomBru is a three-piece ensemble from Denton, TX consisting of David Huff (Stick), Michael Powell (guitar, vocals), and Todd Wink (drums, electronic percussion). The band released their first independent album in 1999 entitled "Imaginary Music" as a five-piece band, but afterwards reflected on their future as a band making relatively non-commercial music. The band took some time off and reconvened as a trio. In 2002, Huff, Powell, and Wink released a 5-track CD called "Ingredients," from which "The Nerve" is taken. On the surface, HomBru sounds like a blend of Gordian Knot and Tool. They incorporate heavy, Stick-laden grooves and edgy guitar riffs with cerebral lyrics that occasionally break into growly Bill Hicks-style vocal flourishes.

Their more melodic moments are reminiscent of upper-tier King's X. For a trio, HomBru fills in the space very well with effects, arpeggios, and most notably the excellent drumwork by Todd Wink. In a guitar-driven band such as this, it is easy to focus on the melodies and grooves, but it is worth listening to the work that Wink puts down behind it all. The "Ingredients" EP is a very good introduction to what HomBru is all about”.

Music Noun 1. An artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner. Thats all there is to say. A complete masterpiece unlike anything out there.

  • Five tracks of progressive perfection.

I've rarely been this pleased with a blind purchase. I got this because of the Stick playing (and because I needed a third CD for the $5 sale), and I haven't regretted it the slightest bit. Every song on here would be my favorite song on almost any other album I own. These guys know how to make complex music sound accessible, yet consistently interesting to the more observant music analyst. This is the hardest line to walk in music, and this EP is a textbook-worthy example of how it should be done. I can't wait to hear what these guys can do with a full-length album (I'm also hoping that Mike will play Stick instead of just guitar on future releases, as I hear he is quite impressive on Grand Stick, my instrument of choice). If this CD is anything to go by, this band will be making huge waves throughout the music world once enough material hits the market.

  • Great music

Sometimes the vocals on this cd bother me a bit, I'm not a huge fan of the guy's voice, but the instrumental work on this cd is great. And all told, the vocals aren't by any means the worst in the rock genre. Definitely worth picking up.

Now this is what is missing in the world. I'm thankful it has come to light. I hope to see this live in LA sometime. When is there going to be a full length? NO RECORD LABEL-that is crazy!

  • How Emotional
    author: Critty

This album took me from one end of my emotional range to the other. From anger and dispair to love and warmth. I absolutely love the sound of the stick bass, and it's been incorporated so skillfully into the mix here. There are so many admirable influences represented in this collection of songs, the music places itself in an entirely new genre.

You can learn so much from these guys - they truly hit all the angles. From the outstanding talent of every member on the verge of mastering their instruments, to the sincere emotion and poignant songwriting that is so often forgotten when music is this well rehearsed and crafty. Give it a spin and just reflect for a moment

  • Great sounding, wonderfully mastered CD!
    author: J. Holt

This CD has a great sound to it, very crisp. Each song has a story of it's own to tell, yet they are all connected by an underlying theme. A must have for all music and audio enthusiasts.
