HoneyGrass at once has a respect for tradition and a willingness to explore new areas of contemporary bluegrass. They balance their music between originals and traditional and contemporary bluegrass, as well as old country. They resist being pegged into any specific area of the genre, preferring to forge their own identity. Ellie's original songs show a great depth of emotion from the angry minor tones in “You Don't Care” to the sweet sentimental sound of “Calling All the Angels”. The group’s vocal strength is emphasized in the original “Going Back Home” and the title track, “She’s Running Wild". Anyone who has heard Marie sing will confirm that her vocals are unmatched. Karen holds down the bottom end of the register with her solid timing. Ray brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the band. He adds a comedic element as he exclaims that he really doesn't mind “playing with three women!” The onstage camaraderie is entertaining! Each band member has talents that compliment the others, resulting in something larger than any of the individuals could achieve. Mr. Emory Lester accompanied HoneyGrass with some of his fabulous instrumentation on this recording.
The three women sang together for the first time in September 2005. After the very first song, they stood silently for a moment and looked at each other with surprise. Each knew that something special was happening, and a new musical friendship was forged. They spent the next year jamming together and playing charity events. They found Ray in a jam session just a week before the Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards Show in November 2006, and had no trouble convincing him to showcase with them, thus beginning a wonderful musical adventure.
By the summer of 2007, the band, was starting to develop a following of faithful fans. HoneyGrass has opened for numerous major bluegrass acts, and have showcased at the International Bluegrass Music Association World of Bluegrass Event in Nashville. They won “Most Promising Group” at the 2007 Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards & most recently, they were nominated at the 2008 Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards in three categories: female vocalist, vocal group & recording of the year for "She's Running Wild".
Here's what others have to say about HoneyGrass:
“The harmony in this band is truly wonderful. They have drive as well as 'sparkle', giving their music a bonafide bluegrass feel. They are one of the finest sounding bands in Ontario.” Steve Pritchard, CKLN 88.1 FM, Toronto
“A sweet relaxing change. The three girls, Karen, Ellie & Marie, are all lead singers in their own right. Together, their harmony vocals blend beautifully! Ray, their steadying force, fills in the holes with some solid banjo licks, and a big smile on his face. A new group to enhance and offer a new fresh fragrance to our Bluegrass scene.” Tony deBoer, promoter
“HoneyGrass has good harmony, excellent stage presence, and is very entertaining.” Peter DeVeau, Tottenham Bluegrass Festival
