Hope Nunnery and Steve Tarshis' playing and writing together grew out of a mutual love and respect for American roots music.
Hope's first influences were rural South Carolina Southern Baptist church music that took a sharp turn for the juke joint. A few of her influences are Ralph Stanley, Blind Willie Johnson, Sister Vestal Goodman, Roscoe Holcomb, Hank Williams, Sr. and Johnny Cash.
Steve has been involved with American roots music as a player, composer and educator for his entire adult life. He has been especially inspired by the Delta musicians, particularly Son House. Steve has worked with artists ranging from Bo Diddley to the Joffery Ballet, as composer, guitarist and or arranger.

In August of 2006 South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan hosted The Mountain Stage New Song Contest one of the contestants that evening was a lady named Hope Nunnery . In my opinion she was the best far and above all those on the bill that night. She did not take first place to my dismay. Well she has finally released her first full length CD “Wilderness Lounge” She along with her musical partner Steve Tarshis have put out a amazing CD listening to it takes one back to the style of the early days of country music. Not being Buddhist I never really gave much thought to reincarnation and still do not but I must say there appears to be a bit of the spirit of Mother Mabel Carter have found it’s way into the vocals of Hope Nunnery. All but two of the songs on Wilderness Lounge have be written by Hope and or Steve. Personal favorites include the title track Wilderness Lounge and Little Pink Radio. If you like pure country with heavy banjo influence I urge you to purchase or download this collection you will be listening over and over.

Raw Southern comfort...original and roots music...solid duet singing

Wilderness Lounge is an experience, from start to finish. It's a drive down the roads of South Carolina, into family, church, an old dusty bar and a woman's heart. Hope's voice is resonant and true, and Steve provides warm harmonies and beautiful work on guitar. It's not surprising that several of the songs have been recognized in songwriting circles. The melodies are memorable and the lyrics are full of rich detail and humor.

If you like old timey country music, check this out. South Carolina singer/songwriter Hope Nunnery’s debut album is a haunting and evocative mix of gospel, country, blues and bluegrass. Ms. Nunnery’s powerful voice, full of backwoods pain and heartache, serves her poignant lyrics well and the musical accompaniment – both her own and partner Steve Tarshis’s picking along with other fine musicians – has a driving beat. I especially like the title song, “Wilderness Lounge,” the hopeful “Spare Me a Set of Wings” and the prayerful “Still Waters.” Although, truly, it’s hard to pick favorites and “Sweep My Yard Clean,” “Little Pink Radio,” and “Judgment Day” have stories to tell and pictures to paint as well.
